๐ŸŒŸ National AccessAbility Week | Red Shirt Day ๐ŸŒŸ

Today, we proudly stand in support of Easter Seals Red Shirt Day, a day of action dedicated to building a more accessible and inclusive world for everyone. โค๏ธ

As we recognize National AccessAbility Week (May 31โ€“June 6), we celebrate the incredible achievements, contributions, and leadership of persons with disabilities across our communities.

Did you know? In Ontario, approximately 2.6 million people, about 1 in 4, live with a disability. That means thousands in our own communities may face barriers to access in their daily lives.

At Community Care Durham, we are committed to supporting individuals facing accessibility challenges and working to break down barriers that limit inclusion. We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to participate fully, feel valued, and be heard.

๐Ÿ’ก Accessibility isnโ€™t just about physical spaces, itโ€™s about attitudes, awareness, and action.

Letโ€™s continue learning, advocating, and creating spaces where everyone belongs.

โœจ Showing Our Appreciation in Oshawa! โœจ

We had a wonderful time celebrating our incredible Oshawa/Whitby volunteers at the Oshawa Curling Club on Thursday, May 21. This yearโ€™s theme, โ€œVolunteering Sparks Joyโ€, perfectly captured the spirit of the event, highlighting the impact, connection, and kindness our volunteers bring to the Oshawa and Whitby communities each and every day. ๐Ÿ’›

The celebration began with a heartfelt Awards Ceremony, recognizing milestone years of service. Of special note, we honoured the following long-term serving volunteers:

๐Ÿ‘ 20 Years โ€“ Karen Luke & Rose Lillie
๐Ÿ‘ 25 Years โ€“ Melinda Mantle, Robert Dingman, Bess Fellows, and Roland and Sheila Mayr

Your dedication is truly inspiring! Bravo to all our volunteers! ๐ŸŽ‰

Guests enjoyed a delicious meal catered by The Pantry Shelf Cafe Bakery & Fine Foods. Another fantastic job by Liz and her team for making the event extra special! ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ

Special thanks to Ian McMillan, our Communications Specialist, for doing an excellent job as our emcee, and to Kingsway Greenhouse for generously donating beautiful hanging baskets as door prizes. ๐ŸŒธ

Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate! It was a joyful evening made possible by all of you! ๐Ÿ’ซ

June is National Indigenous History Month, a time to honour the diverse histories, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Mรฉtis Peoples, and to reflect on the ongoing journey toward reconciliation.

At Community Care Durham, this month is a reminder of the importance of respect, inclusion, and culturally responsive care. Every day, our work is rooted in supporting the dignity and well-being of all community members, including Indigenous clients, caregivers, and families. By listening, learning, and building meaningful relationships, we strengthen our commitment to equity and community connection.

We encourage everyone to take time this month to learn from Indigenous voices, support Indigenous-led initiatives, and reflect on how we can each contribute to a more inclusive and compassionate community.

June is Seniors Month, a time to celebrate, recognize, and honour the incredible seniors who enrich our communities every day. โค๏ธ

At Community Care Durham, we are privileged to serve amazing older adults whose wisdom, resilience, kindness, and life experiences inspire us daily. From sharing stories and laughter to showing strength through lifeโ€™s challenges, the seniors we support remind us of the importance of connection, compassion, and community.

This month, and every month, we thank the seniors in our community for all they have contributed and continue to contribute to our families, neighbourhoods, and lives.

We are honoured to walk alongside you and support you in living safely, comfortably, and with dignity wherever you call home.

Happy Seniors Month! ๐ŸŒผ

๐Ÿ’™ Weโ€™re halfway there and feeling so grateful! ๐Ÿ’™

Weโ€™re officially at the midpoint of our Commit to Community Campaign, and we want to send a heartfelt ๐—ง๐—›๐—”๐—ก๐—ž ๐—ฌ๐—ข๐—จ to everyone whoโ€™s supported us so far. Your generosity is already making a difference, helping provide critical services that support caregivers and the people they care for every day.

Every contribution is transforming lives, easing caregiver stress, and helping prevent burnout. And while weโ€™ve made amazing progress, thereโ€™s still more to do.

Letโ€™s keep the momentum going and finish this campaign strong. Together, we can show just how powerful community can be.

๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿง A Sweet Celebration in Pickering! ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽ‰

Our Pickering Day Program is always ready for a celebration, and May 28 brought a truly heartwarming surprise.

George, one of our wonderful program clients, arrived carrying trays of cupcakes to share with everyone. At first, the team worried they had missed his birthday, but that wasnโ€™t it at all!

George was celebrating his one-year anniversary in the Day Program. ๐Ÿ’™

Itโ€™s moments like these that remind us how meaningful our community truly is. Georgeโ€™s gesture speaks volumes about the connections heโ€™s built with staff, volunteers, and fellow clients over the past year.

Hereโ€™s to friendships, milestones, and the joy of celebrating together. Weโ€™re so glad youโ€™re part of our community, George! ๐Ÿฅณ

๐Ÿ’™ Commit to Community: Dignity, Independence, and Care ๐Ÿ’™

For Dorothy, a simple trip to the doctor can feel like a lifeline. Living in North Durham with limited transportation options, she relies on Community Care Durhamโ€™s Assisted Transportation Service to get her safely to medical appointments across the region.

Thanks to this vital service, Dorothy never travels alone. Sheโ€™s supported by her trusted Personal Support Worker, someone sheโ€™s deeply grateful for. To Dorothy, independence means dignity, and right now, that dignity comes on four wheels.

Your generosity helps provide personal support for clients like Dorothy, and peace of mind for the caregivers who support them every day.
