When it comes to removing Scotch Broom...we have questions:

What do you think works better β€” cutting it at the ground or pulling it out by the roots?

If you're part of "Team cut it!", how important is it to cut the lateral (underground) root?

Does the soil composition, sun exposure, age of the Scotch broom, or the health of the surrounding native plants play a role?

This Saturday, May 23rd from 10:00 - 12:00 in Royal Bay Painter Trail we're going to be testing three methods and then monitoring results for the next 3–5 years.

Join us at our event if you'd like to be a part of the study: https://www.facebook.com/events/1300388098647713

Two weekends and two amazing events! Thanks to all the volunteers who came out this morning to Colwood Creek park and last weekend to Lagoon West park to remove the Himalayan blackberry and English ivy. We're back at it in a few weeks in Royal Bay on May 23rd to get to more of that Scotch broom. Hope to see you there.

Something exciting is happening at Colwood Creek Park!

The Colwood Garden Society just received city approval to build a community garden in Colwood Creek Park β€” and this Saturday, we're bringing our tools and helping clear the way for it by removing invasive species in the area. 🌱

So, Join us THIS SATURDAY, MAY 2nd from 10:00 - 12:00. We're meeting at the entrance near Antobus Crescent and Brittany Drive.

No experience needed β€” just wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty, bring a water and we'll provide the tools, training and treats.

As Earth week and Volunteer appreciation week wrap up, we would like to thank the many volunteers in our group and beyond who work tirelessly to make our community a better place.

We're also proud to share two news stories (see in the comments) from Ben Fenlon of the Goldsteam Gazette about our recent award from CENiC Citizens' Environment Network in Colwood and also about our two amazing events with the Scouts.

And one last pitch, don't forget we have an event TOMORROW that we'd love to see you attend. See you at Lagoon West Park 10:00-12:00 am where we rescue the Heritage Fruit Orchard from the nasty invasives. See our page for more event details.

On this Earth Day, we would like to thank the CENiC Citizens' Environment Network in Colwood and Mayor Doug Kobayashi for presenting us with the 2026 Environmental Stewardship Award for an organization operating in Colwood. After just 9 months of operations, and with the support of the City of Colwood, our volunteers have made a huge difference in the community. We've held 40 events, removed 100 cubic meters of invasive species (the size of a filled semi-trailer truck) and contributed over 500 volunteer hours. We're so grateful for the support and look forward to continuing the good work. Please consider joining us at an upcoming event. All ages are welcome. Our next one is THIS SUNDAY, APRIL 26 (10 am-12 pm) in Lagoon West Park. Details on our website or on our Facebook Events Page.

There are many great organizations that remove invasive species and restore our trails and parks. Today we were pleased to help out ReImagine West Shore in Langford. A shout out to the many volunteers including the three city councilors Mary J. Wagner, Colby Harder and Keith Yacucha who attended. And let's just say that we don't just pull weeds as evidenced by this piece removed from the stream in Westhills Park. Langford residents are always welcome to join us at our events as we all share this beautiful corner of the world. Our next event is Sunday, April 26, 10-12 pm, in Lagoon West Park. Check our website or page for more details.

We did it. 🌿

Today at Royal Bay, 15 volunteers showed up (our biggest group ever) and spent their Sunday morning doing something to make a difference.

Together, we removed 6 cubic meters of invasive Scotch broom from along the Painter Trail β€” helping to restore the native plants in this beautiful area.

Thank you to everyone who came out including our 4 "first timers". And a big thank you to the City of Colwood parks team for their ongoing partnership and support.

Our next event is Sunday, April 26th at Lagoon West Park. Hope to see you there.
