On May 21, we held our Volunteer Recognition event to acknowledge the amazing commitment of those who show up for the watershed in so many ways -- building raingardens, planting native species, monitoring water quality, raising awareness…they do it all! Thank you! We couldn’t do it without you!

We also are immensely grateful to our sponsors/ donors for the evening’s festivities. Many thanks to Willow's Pizza, Mosi Bakery- Cafe & Gelateria , Gardenworks, Starbucks , The Old Farm Market , Twyla's Flower Farm and Save-On-Foods . Please help us acknowledge them by supporting these generous local businesses.

Salmon returns off the table for Oak Bay’s Bowker Creek – for now....

Gerald Harris, director of the Friends of Bowker Creek Society (FoBC), said that despite the non-profit’s best efforts, last year’s spawning season saw no salmon return to the waterway.

Ian Graeme, the group’s co-chair, said last year that ocean currents, natural predators, fishing, pathogens, pollution and climate change mean that “typically fewer than one per cent of fertilized eggs survive to adulthood and spawn.” Other factors include the creek’s physical barriers, like culverts, upstream sediment, pollution and highly variable water flows. Still, hope remains. Chum could swim back in 2026 and 2028 from eggs FoBC incubated in 2023 and 2025. Between March and April last year, the group released approximately 10,000 fry into the waterway.
