✈️ Heidi and Rob had an insightful few days in Kelowna at the BCAC26 Conference: Soaring Above Challenges – Eyes on the Horizon. Heidi spoke on the panel “Tackling the Climate Sustainability Challenge – Decarbonizing Airports,” sharing Synergy’s perspective on advancing decarbonization across the aviation sector. Both returned with fresh insights into the innovation and momentum shaping this rapidly evolving industry.

🌟 Top Takeaways from the Conference:

🌿 Sustainability & Decarbonization: There was a strong focus on funding pathways toward low‑carbon operations and how to accelerate decarbonization in aviation

⚡️ Innovation in Energy Systems: Many discussed models for electrification, including consortium‑led charging logistics and the vision of airports as future renewable energy hubs.

🛩️ Advanced Air Mobility: Creating an “electrical aviation corridor” for the Lower Mainland and the Island, similar to the Green Shipping Corridor. This could be an ideal location given short distances, relatively good weather, and supply of clean power.

These pillars have been reinforced by the Government's recent mandate to increase Canada’s defense spending from 2-5% of GDP. This will represent millions of new dollars for dual-purpose (military/civilian) technologies, and aviation will be a big part of that.

👏 A big thank‑you to the BC Aviation Council and everyone involved in hosting such a forward‑looking conference. We’re excited to continue supporting the sector’s journey toward deeper decarbonization and long‑term resilience.

🌿 Happy International Biodiversity Day!
Biodiversity is declining at an alarming rate: According to the WWF’s Living Planet Report, global wildlife populations have declined by an average of 73% since 1970, a pace that, in many regions, is outstripping the impacts of climate change. Globally, over 46,000 species are currently at risk of extinction, underscoring the urgent need for targeted conservation. This crisis is driven largely by habitat loss, invasive species, and climate change.

Urgent action is needed, whether it's big or small. Take action this International Biodiversity Day:

Small but Mighty:

🌼 Start a native pollinator garden
Support bees, butterflies, and other essential pollinators by planting species native to your region.

♻️ Choose conscious purchasing
Avoid buying new when possible. Opt for second-hand clothing, furniture, and household items to reduce resource extraction and waste.

🌱 Join invasive species removal groups
Help restore local ecosystems by removing harmful invasive plants.

Increase Your Reach:

🌳Support organizations fighting biodiversity loss and environmental degredation
Groups like these are working to protect ecosystems and prevent further damage:
Greenpeace (https://www.greenpeace.org/usa/forests/solutions-to-deforestation/)
The Wilderness Committee (https://www.wildernesscommittee.org/our-work/bc-old-growth)
Good Food Institute (https://gfi.org/)
Giving Green (https://www.givinggreen.earth/)

🗳️ Vote for leaders who prioritize biodiversity and climate action
Policy matters - support candidates committed to protecting and restoring ecosystems.

🏢 Assess your business’s impact on nature
Every organization plays a role in ecosystem health.

What’s the biggest challenge marine operators are currently facing?

We asked Kyle for his perspective, and here are the key insights he shared:

⚡ The Challenge:
The current geopolitical climate has led to a steep increase in fuel prices, which is reflected in the operational costs of marine ports and operators.

🌱 The Solution:
For businesses looking to address this risk, they have the opportunity to seek local access to clean fuels, helping them build business resilience while supporting local communities. This can also look like an increase in electrification or renewable energy!

Having a hard time getting guests to recycle? Or want to get your team behind a new climate initiative?🌿

The Behaviour Change Hierarchy explains why some approaches work better than others, and how to design and communicate to shape behaviour.

This resource is built on real-world principles: if a service isn’t optimum for the user, it rarely achieves its objectives. The easier and more intuitive the experience, the more likely people are to engage.

Key Takeaways from the Behaviour Change Hierarchy:

🚫 REMOVAL
Removing the opportunity to do anything other than the desired behaviour. It’s the most effective strategy and requires the least communication.
Example: Only providing recycling bins and recyclable packaging in a space so there’s no option to dispose of materials incorrectly.

🟢 NEUTRALITY
The desired behaviour should not cost more or take longer than the alternatives. When removal isn’t possible, communication must increase, focusing on awareness, information, and motivation.
Example: If a transit pass takes more money and time than a vehicle, people are less likely to use transit

✅️ EASE
The desired behaviour should be easier and more accessible than doing something else.
Example: Placing recycling containers in convenient, visible locations so choosing them requires less effort than using general waste.

🗣️ ASK
This strategy, on its own, is the least effective, requires the most engagement and intuitive design, and benefits from multiple interactions.
Example: Front desk staff ask guests to turn off the lights when leaving their rooms, and stickers are placed above the light switches in each room.

Victoria International Airport (YYJ) is advancing organizational climate action with its new dynamic Decarbonization Model, demonstrating a data‑driven pathway to decarbonization.

We partnered with YYJ to build a flexible decarbonization model that can be adapted based on finances, timelines, and operational realities. This model gives YYJ the tools it needs to make confident, cost‑effective decisions on its journey to net zero.

This project included:

📈 Building multiple scenario models to evaluate reduction pathways across all major emission sources

🔋 Assessing electrification opportunities, renewable energy options, and emerging low‑carbon technologies

💰 Integrating capital planning, cost curves, and financial forecasting to support long‑term investment decisions

🎯 Creating a clear, functional tool anyone across the team could use to plan decarbonization

⚓️ What’s your take on electrification in marine ports?

We asked Jill Doucette for her perspective, and here are the key insights she shared:

⚡ The Challenge:
Electrification is a crucial next step for marine ports. It allows them to move away from emissions-intensive fuels and offer moored vessels electricity at port instead of running engines or generators. However, the biggest hurdle is often securing enough electrical capacity to meet growing demand.

🌱 The Solution:
Investing in renewable energy to expand port electricity capacity without emissions-intensive fuels. Solar‑covered parking, geoexchange systems, tidal energy, and wind power are all viable options we help ports explore as they move toward electrification.

What does low‑carbon mining leadership look like? ⛏️🌿

Synergy’s Founder & CEO, Jill Doucette, sat down with Mining Magazine to talk about the future of decarbonized mining and how innovation, impact, and a willingness to rethink “business as usual” are reshaping the sector.

Jill shared how Synergy is working with forward‑thinking companies like Sasquatch Resources to push the industry toward a more sustainable future.

Here are a few key takeaways:

🏔️ Early days innovation: Synergy’s first mining project became one of the first exploration site to purchase offsets for the operation, embedding carbon accounting and a roadmap to net zero into the feasibility study. That early success raised the bar for what Synergy can do to help critical minerals decarbonize.

🛠️ Decarbonization across the full mine life: Today, Synergy supports sites from planning through operations, helping design energy systems, evaluate fleet transitions, integrate Indigenous partnerships, and benchmark carbon per gram to drive competitive advantage.

💡 ESG is a business strategy: Mines that lead in sustainability gain access to capital, strengthen social license, and reduce permitting risk. When ESG is integrated into the business plan, it leads to real economic value.

👩‍🏭 Opportunities for women in mining. Jill highlights that diverse perspectives are increasingly sought after in leadership roles. Women entering the sector can find strong networks, mentorship, and meaningful pathways to shape the industry.

🌱 Focus on Forward: Her advice to her younger self: don’t let early missteps hold you back. Curiosity, courage, and asking questions matter far more than perfection.
