Every day, around 10,000 Filipinos leave the Philippines in search of opportunities abroad, but this isn’t simply a matter of personal choice, it is the direct result of a system that is designed to subjugate, exploit, and oppress our people. This forced migration is rooted in the country’s continued dependence on foreign powers, the dominance of political family dynasties that prioritize their own interests over the people’s welfare, and an economic system that allows the nation’s land and resources to generate profits for foreign interests instead of supporting national industrialization and genuine economic development.
Marcos Jr. continues his dictator father’s legacy by upholding the Labour Export Policy. During his State of the Nation Address on July 27, 2026 he continued to spit out lie after lie about his so-called victories, while conditions at home continue to deteriorate, pushing more Filipinos to leave in search of better opportunities. Yet life abroad is also becoming increasingly difficult, including for Filipino students who migrate here with the hope of building a better future.
Our migration is not simply a personal choice but one many of our people are forced to make. Poverty wages and the lack of jobs back home force our people abroad, while Canada pins the blame on the high cost of living, lack of affordable housing, deteriorating social services to migrants and newcomers while at the same time benefiting from their labour and precarious working conditions.
We refuse a system that treats Filipinos and other migrant communities as cheap and disposable labour abroad and back home in the Philippines.
