We remember. We resist.

The Canadian Tamil Youth Alliance remembers our Maaveerar, who sacrificed their lives in the fight for Tamileelam.

Fighting against oppression and genocide at the hands of the Sri Lankan state, thousands of மாவீரர் laid down their lives in pursuit of an independent Tamil homeland where our people could live free.

Today, we remember their stories and vow to never let their sacrifices be in vain.

Today, we remember the sacrifice of Thileepan Anna, who gave his life for the freedom and dignity of our people.

What made his sacrifice extraordinary was his refusal not only of food but also of water. For 11 days, he faced unimaginable pain as his body slowly failed.  His courage inspired thousands of Tamils to join him in the fast, standing in solidarity and amplifying his call for justice.  On September 26, 1987, at just 23 years old, Thileepan Anna passed away, leaving behind a legacy that would live on for generations.

His act was one of pure selflessness. By giving up his own life, Thileepan Anna became Thiyaga Theepam (the light of sacrifice), remembered for his courage, dignity, and his unwavering resilience for Tamileelam.

On Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day, we remember the tens of thousands of innocent Tamil men, women, and children who were massacred by the Sri Lankan Army in Mullivaikkal, as well the Tamil people who continue to be victims to the ongoing Tamil Genocide in Tamileelam.

In the final stages of the armed conflict in 2009, our people were confined to so-called “No Fire Zones” under the promise of safety from the continuous shelling and artillery on civilian positions by the Sri Lankan Army that had intensified in the final months. With hundreds of thousands of Tamils concentrated in these zones, the Sri Lankan military launched a relentless campaign of indiscriminate cluster bomb, mortar, and artillery attacks. Estimates put the total death toll in the final months of the conflict at 70,000, and 169,796 remain unaccounted for.

The genocide continues today in the form of land grabs, temple and memorial desecration, surveillance, and Sinhalization of the Tamil homeland. To date, nobody has been held accountable for the injustices committed against the people of Tamileelam.

We will not forget. We will not let the world forget.

On Maaveerar Naal, we commemorate the thousands of brave souls who laid down their lives in the fight for an independent Tamileelam where the Tamil people could live free of oppression.

Today, we remember their stories and vow to carry forward their legacies through advocacy and education as youth in the diaspora. We will not rest until their dream of a Tamil nation is realized.

Today, we stand together in reflection to honour the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives to protect the freedoms we hold dear in Canada and around the world. We remember their strength, acknowledge the loss endured by their families, and commit to preserving their legacies.

November marks Maaveerar Month. A solemn time in which we commemorate the brave souls who fought for the freedom and liberation of Eelam Tamils who for decades were subjected to oppression, persecution, and violence at the hands of the Sri Lankan state.

The month serves as a time to keep their memories alive. Young Tamil men and women like ourselves who lost their lives in the pursuit of a Tamileelam where their people could be free.

The Canadian Tamil Youth Alliance stands in solidarity with Tamils around the world as we commemorate our Maaveerar, and encourage the youth in the diaspora to do their part to learn and educate others. Let us ensure the memories of our Maaveerar are never forgotten.
