On Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day, we remember the tens of thousands of innocent Tamil men, women, and children who were massacred by the Sri Lankan Army in Mullivaikkal, as well the Tamil people who continue to be victims to the ongoing Tamil Genocide in Tamileelam.
In the final stages of the armed conflict in 2009, our people were confined to so-called “No Fire Zones” under the promise of safety from the continuous shelling and artillery on civilian positions by the Sri Lankan Army that had intensified in the final months. With hundreds of thousands of Tamils concentrated in these zones, the Sri Lankan military launched a relentless campaign of indiscriminate cluster bomb, mortar, and artillery attacks. Estimates put the total death toll in the final months of the conflict at 70,000, and 169,796 remain unaccounted for.
The genocide continues today in the form of land grabs, temple and memorial desecration, surveillance, and Sinhalization of the Tamil homeland. To date, nobody has been held accountable for the injustices committed against the people of Tamileelam.
We will not forget. We will not let the world forget.
