Thank you Museum of Toronto!

We would like to express our gratitude for allowing us the honour of participating in this amazing exhibit by hosting our artifacts and sharing our story. Corrinne, Bria and all the staff have been a pleasure to collaborate with and we applaud all your hard work in making this happen.

The exhibit, The T.O. You Don’t Know, is thoughtfully presented with many interactive opportunities. We learned so much about Toronto’s lesser known history.

The exhibit runs until December 30, 2026 at 401 Richmond Street W. and is well worth the visit.

Working long hours under strict secrecy, she inspected and marked artillery shells and handled explosive materials in hazardous conditions, helping supply vital am******on for Allied forces overseas. Rena and her husband moved into the barracks at the Malton Airfield. Though her wartime service ended when she was dismissed after becoming pregnant, Rena’s dedication and courage continued the rest of her life.

Suddenly there was work available for women on the homefront and with medical bills mounting, Helen joined the mu*****ns team at GECO. For those hard years, Helen balanced motherhood, hospital visits, and fulltime secret work. She’s a testament to all the hardworking women of her generation. When the war ended, Helen and her husband became the first residents to live at GECO in its emergency housing, which helped many families after the war.

“After shift hours from her work at General Engineering, Scarboro, Hilda Reid spends time at her plot in the plant's big allotment. Here she's getting herself a cooling drink.”
The 364 acre Geco complex producing mu*****ns extended South from Eglinton Avenue East to present-day Hymus Road, between Warden Avenue and Birchmount Road, and consisted of 172 buildings and allotment gardens for workers to grow fresh produce.

Like so many Bomb Girls, she helped prove that women could thrive in demanding jobs.

When the war ended, many returned home forever changed; more independent, more
confident, and proud of the role they had played in history.

Dorothy herself went on to get raise a large, happy family of 7.

Oh the stories she could tell…
