Refugee Rights Day

Refugee Rights Day Refugee Rights Day is also a time to learn about the threats to those rights.

2010 is the 25th anniversary of the Singh decision.

To bring attention to the advances made in the protection of refugee rights in Canada as a result of the 1985 Supreme Court decision - known as the "Singh decision". On April 4th, 1985 the Supreme Court recognized that:

-The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the basic rights of refugee claimants in Canada.

-Refugee determination must respect the principles of fundamental justic

e.

-Fundamental justice requires that, where credibility is an issue, refugee claimants must have an oral hearing. Refugee Rights Day is celebrated each April 4th
to bring attention to the advances made in the protection of refugee
rights in Canada as a result of the Singh decision. Since the Singh decision...
-An independent, specialized tribunal, the Immigration and Refugee Board, makes decisions on refugee claims following oral hearings.

-Courts have recognized in subsequent decisions that the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms protects people from deportation to persecution.

-Canada’s refugee system has won the reputation for being
one of the fairest in the world

TODAY@Noon (March 27th)! Rally for Refugee Health Care!

RALLY FOR REFUGEE HEALTHCARE
Friday, March 27 | 12–1pm
MP Julie Dzerowicz's constituency office
1202 Bloor Street West (at Bloor & Dufferin)

Join healthcare providers, refugees and community members to call on the federal government to reverse cuts to the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) refugee healthcare coverage.

The federal government has cut 15% of the refugee healthcare budget and is introducing unaffordable co-payments for essential healthcare, including medications, mental health counselling, physical therapy, and vision care. These cuts take effect May 1, 2026, and will immediately harm refugees, who are already struggling to meet basic needs, like food and housing.

These co-payments function as a denial of care - refugees’ health will worsen, more individuals will unnecessarily end up in already strained emergency departments and hospitals, and health care costs will rise. Financially, the co-payment plan will cost Canada more, not less.

MP Julie Dzerowicz, Chair of the Standing Committee on Immigration and Chair of the Toronto Liberal Caucus, has stated she supports these cuts. We are bringing our voices directly to her door.

Join us in standing up for refugee rights and health for all.

🩺 Health workers: please wear your white coats, scrubs, and stethoscopes.

It’s time to turn the tide and tell a positive story about immigrants and refugees, to build back support for an inclusive Canada, and tackle the problems we face in this country, together!

The Canadian Council for Refugees / Conseil canadien pour les réfugiés along with over 200 supporting organizations across the country, launched the We’re Better Together campaign to counter the rising tide of hate and blame towards immigrants and refugees.

We are taking inspiration this year for the theme of our events, which will be posted shortly!

Please check it out and join at https://bettertogethercanada.ca/ !
