Yesterday, on October 5th, to mark World Animal Day, We Animals joined FOUR PAWS at the United Nations to bring the topic of animal sentience into a space where global decisions are made.

We Animals founder Jo-Anne McArthur served as keynote speaker, inviting member state representatives to consider animals as individuals with feelings, experiences, and lives that matter. A photography exhibit then invited those present to look closer.

“This could really look bad.”

Workers at this award-winning farm knew an M&S inspector was coming. But they didn’t know hidden cameras were already there, filming their clean-up, what the inspection missed, or what happened after.

This farm was RSPCA Assured at the time, a scheme that promises “world-leading welfare standards”. If this is the best, imagine the rest.

This isn’t one bad farm or a few bad workers. It’s factory farming, hidden behind a name we trust.

The RSPCA has helped end cruelty before. It’s time for them to help end this.

Jo-Anne McArthur (photojournalist and Founder of We Animals) is outside United Nations Headquarters in New York City to mark World Animal Day.

Inside, We Animals photographs line the walls, inviting policymakers, diplomats, researchers and civil society leaders to look more closely at the lives of animals. The event is co-hosted by FOUR PAWS (FOUR PAWS USA), the Permanent Mission of France to the United Nations and UNDP.

The premise is straightforward, and long overdue: the lives of animals, especially those we exploit, are inextricably linked to public health, biodiversity loss, food systems and climate. Yet animals remain largely absent from the rooms where decisions about these issues are made.

Jo will shortly deliver the keynote, drawing on two decades of documenting animals around the world to bring into view what policy papers alone cannot.

When 70% of Quebec dairy barns keep cows tethered, dairy companies shouldn’t be creating the impression that cows routinely spend their lives grazing in lush green pastures.

ICYMI: What do conditions on Canadian farms actually look like?

A new investigation from Le Journal de Montréal is bringing some of those realities into public view, featuring photographs by We Animals photojournalists documenting farms across Québec.

“What is most striking isn’t just the difficult images, but the accumulation of suffering and the apparent normality of these conditions,”

The article also highlights a reality at the heart of our Not So Nice: Inside Canada’s Animal Farming series: farmed animals in Canada lack meaningful legal protections, with many accepted farming practices governed by industry standards rather than enforceable welfare laws.

This is why documentation matters. Our photojournalists go inside farms and other places where animals are used to show the public what these systems look like, and to make the lives of the animals within them visible.

We’re grateful to Le Journal de Montréal for bringing these images and this conversation to a wider audience.
