Scarborough ACORN knows how to throw a BBQ - and take action! 🌭✊

ACORN members at 25, 35, and 45 Trudelle St. brought neighbours together for food, fun, and tenant solidarity. Mayor Olivia Chow 🇨🇦 joined members at the grill before touring the buildings and seeing Golden Equity’s disrepair firsthand.

Tenants showed off unreliable elevators, damaged windows, and their $200/month parkade - a large asphalt slab with no assigned (or even guaranteed) parking.

The day ended with a HUGE demand letter drop on Golden Equity’s office door. They’ve RTS returned our last letter - let’s see them try that with a 3’x5’ bristol board! 📮😘

In case you missed it: Toronto ACORN won a massive victory for remedial action because of these STRONG leaders willing to stand up and fight! ✊🔥

Watch our members hold City Hall's feet to the fire in these clips. For years, corporate landlords and slumlords have pocketed our hard-earned rent money while leaving our neighbours to live with mould, pests, and crumbling buildings.

ACORN has been leading this fight for in Toronto since 2004. Because of persistent tenant organizing, we won remedial action! That means when slumlords refuse to fix our homes, the city has to step in, do the repairs, and put the bill directly onto the landlord’s property taxes.

Over the years, our members have won stronger city bylaws, forced the creation of the RentSafeTO program, and secured millions of dollars in repairs and investment for our homes.

This is what happens when working-class tenants build real power.

Toronto ACORN took over the streets of downtown today for ACORN International’s Global Day of Action! Under orange skies and choking wildfire smoke, members marched to the Ontario IESO to demand:

💥 That the IESO match City funding for the Air Conditioner Assistance Program; and
💥 An expansion of the Ontario Electricity Support Program to cover new AC surcharges landlords are pushing onto tenants

We delivered our demand letter—and IESO promised to follow up!

After a letter delivery and a sustained email campaign, ACORN members and their neighbours are celebrating after permanent electrical power was restored to 11 Catford Road today!

After a power failure on June 7, residents faced a 36-hour blackout followed by weeks of failing power generators before finally one caught fire on June 30. That day, as residents evacuated the building, ACORN members marched over to the rental office to deliver their demand: a clear timeline for power to be restored.

Yesterday, Toronto ACORN received a letter from the CEO of the Sorbara Group of Companies and a VP at DMS Property Management apologizing for the incident and committing to solving the problem once and for all. Then today, members called our office with the good news: power’s reliably restored.

With a heat wave like the one we’re facing, vital services like water and power are life-or-death for tenants. Today’s victory proves that organizing works!
