June marks National Indigenous History Month, a time to honour the traditions, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and MĆ©tis peoples across Turtle Island. It is also a time to reflect on the lasting impact of colonial systems that disrupted families, cultures, and communities.
The residential school system separated children from their families, languages, and identities, causing deep and ongoing harm. It also helped shape todayās child welfare system, where Indigenous children remain overrepresented.
At StepStones, we work side by side with Indigenous youth as they navigate systems shaped by this history. We are committed to listening, learning, and supporting their paths forward with respect, accountability, and care.
This month and beyond, we invite our staff and community to deepen their understanding and take action that supports Indigenous youth, families, and communities.
