A Mural in Mabelle Park?! We are so excited about our partnership with OddSide Arts and muralists Jacquie Comrie and Jasmine Vanstone. Here's a peek from one of our community consultations, where youth shared their thoughts, feelings, and artistic inspirations surrounding Mabelle Park and what they might want to see in a mural representing them! Huge thanks to Oddside Arts, Jacquie, and Jasmine. Keep your eyes on Mabelle Park this summer to see the mural take shape!

This project has been made possible through support from StreetARToronto, Mural Routes, Ontario Arts Council - Conseil des arts de l'Ontario, and Toronto Arts Council.

Participants from our Mabelle Youth Corps and Newcomer Artist Ambassador programs had the pleasure of visiting MOCA Toronto last month through MOCA’s Community Art Pass program. It’s not every day that we get to take a trip beyond Mabelle Avenue, and the warm welcome from MOCA was a great reminder of the wonderful cultural institutions that Toronto has to offer. Thanks for having us, MOCA!

We’re feeling a lot of gratitude following our Iftar Night Market. Thank you to everyone who helped us bring a Mabelle Arts tradition into a new season and for braving the wintery night with us! Thank you, lantern and moon watcher builders of all ages! Thank you to the young cooks who cooked and tested our signature recipes! Thank you, Tazi & Octi Bakerii for food leadership and keeping us happy with sweet and savoury snacks around the fire. To Michael Burtt and Pat Austin for keeping us warm around the fire physically and heartfully. Also, special thank yous are going to the guest artists who brought beauty and magic to the night! The Diar Band: Tarek Ghriri (guitar), Nour (percussion), Asser Abdo (vocals), Puppeteer Afsaneh Zamani, who made birds and ladies dance, architectural designers Safoura Zahedi and Mark Francis, who taught us about the significance of lanterns in Islamic knowledge and who designed and built the Symmetry Lantern installation with us. Also, thank you to Newcomer Artist in Residence Katrin Faridani of Faridani Foto and WTTN Newcomer Artist Ambassador Rishikesh Sharma, who developed our Shedding Light lantern workshops and the installation with the language learner clients from Skills for Change, and lastly to Lukas Barron for bringing flute tunes into the night air to lead us round the park to follow and find the moon!

Join Safoura and Mark for a fun and fascinating hands-on learning afternoon where we’ll explore rich traditions of geometric design to create beautiful new lanterns for our Iftar Night Market!

Safoura Zahedi is an artist, architect, and educator. Safoura’s creative practice intersects art and architecture, craft and technology, spirituality and materiality to connect cultures and traditions. In 2022, Safoura travelled to 17 countries and over 40 cities to study geometric patterns in art and architecture across major historic Islamic dynasties.

Mark Francis is an architectural designer, installation artist, and educator based in Toronto, Ontario. His explorations focus on geometric design traditions and organic shapes in urban architecture. Mark innovative use of 3D design technology allows people to design public spaces they use.

Oddside Arts is hosting community engagement workshops on March 11 & March 13 for Mabelle Avenue Residents to gather stories, colours, and ideas for an upcoming mural in Mabelle Park. These sessions are a space to reflect on connection, care, and what it means to gather in a place that serves such a meaningful purpose for the Mabelle community. You’ll also get to meet the lead muralist Jacquie Comrie and supporting muralist Jasmine Vanstone.

Together, we’ll explore how Mabelle Park can continue to grow as an art park and community centre. Your lived experiences, cultural narratives, and hopes for the space will directly inform the mural’s design.

Come share, imagine, and co-create with us.

Seniors’ Workshop: Wednesday, March 11, 1 PM - 3 PM
Youth and Families’ Workshop: Friday, March 13, 4 PM - 6 PM
Mabelle Arts (38 Mabelle Ave)

All community members welcome!

These workshops are led by Oddside Arts supported by Mabelle Arts and centres collective voices at every step because public art is strongest when it’s built together.

We’d also like to acknowledge that this project is made possible due to the support of:
