🐴 Non-Profit Spotlight: Pride Stables

In the Waterloo Region, horses are helping transform lives every day.

Pride Stables is dedicated to creating a safe and supportive environment where individuals with disabilities can experience the transformative benefits of a high-quality therapeutic riding program. Through the power of horses and the dedication of volunteers, Pride Stables inspires personal growth and fosters therapeutic development.

Their vision is simple but powerful: A special place where horses empower people.

Through their dedication, Pride Stables strives to make a lasting impact on the lives of those they serve — one ride at a time.

💛 Why It Began

Founded in 1973 as the Central Ontario Developmental Riding Program (CODRP), Pride Stables has a long history of serving the community.

Incorporated in 1974, the program initially operated at Pineview Stables in Shakespeare, leasing facilities to meet growing demand.

In 1988, CODRP relocated to its current home on Pioneer Tower Road in Kitchener, a property lovingly named Pride Stables.

Today, Pride Stables is the only therapeutic riding program serving Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, and the surrounding region.

With a 30-stall barn, indoor riding arena, and 20 acres of land, Pride Stables provides therapeutic riding opportunities to more than 350 children and adults with disabilities each year.

Their commitment remains steadfast: delivering safe, high-quality therapeutic riding programs while building a strong foundation for future growth.

🧡 Who They Serve & Their Impact

Pride Stables provides therapeutic riding programs for individuals with disabilities, fostering growth, connection, and empowerment.

Each week, more than 340 riders from Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo, and surrounding communities participate in classes supported by an incredible team of dedicated volunteers.

Programs

Year-Round Classes
Offered throughout the fall, winter, and spring, these lessons are tailored to each rider’s abilities, teaching the fundamentals of horseback riding while promoting personal development and social connections.

Camp Pride
Their summer day camp provides eight weeks of fun, inclusion, and learning for nearly 200 children each year, supported by passionate volunteers.

Benefits of Therapeutic Riding

Therapeutic horseback riding combines the horse’s natural movement with targeted exercises to:

• Simulate human walking motion
• Provide passive heat massage to relax or stimulate muscles
• Improve muscle strength, flexibility, and coordination

Beyond the physical benefits, riders build meaningful relationships with their horses, volunteers, and instructors, enhancing overall well-being and confidence.

Their Team

Pride Stables is supported by:

• 3 full-time staff
• 3 part-time staff
• 3 certified instructors
• A dedicated Board of Directors
• More than 350 volunteers

Together, they bring the mission of Pride Stables to life.

🚨 Current Needs

Pride Stables is currently looking for volunteers for Camp Pride, their summer day camp program.

Volunteers do not need horse experience but must be at least 15 years old and attend a two-hour orientation session.

They are also seeking horse sponsors, with 11 horses currently in need of sponsorship support.

For sponsorship information, contact: [email protected]

🤝 How You Can Support

There are many ways to support Pride Stables:

🏠 Non-Profit Spotlight: Youth Without Shelter

In Toronto, a dedicated organization is helping young people experiencing homelessness find safety, support, and a path forward.

Youth Without Shelter (YWS) is a charity dedicated to empowering young people experiencing homelessness to reach their full potential. Their vision is simple but powerful: ending youth homelessness one step at a time, one young person at a time.

Located in North Etobicoke, YWS provides a safe, supportive environment where youth can rebuild their confidence, develop life skills, and move toward independent living.

YWS offers emergency shelter and comprehensive support programs for youth aged 16–24 who have found themselves without stable housing. Their services go far beyond providing a bed for the night — offering guidance, counselling, education support, and employment training to help young people build stable futures. Through a trauma-informed, youth-centered approach, they focus on each young person’s strengths and resilience while supporting their transition toward independence.

💛 Why It Began

Youth Without Shelter was founded in 1986 by a group of teachers and guidance counsellors who saw firsthand that many students were struggling without safe housing.

At the time, there were very few resources available for young people in suburban Toronto facing homelessness. Motivated by the urgent need to protect and support vulnerable youth, these educators came together to create a safe place where young people could access shelter, guidance, and support.

What began as a grassroots effort has grown into an organization that has helped thousands of youth find stability, confidence, and opportunity.

🧡 Who They Serve & Their Impact

Today, Youth Without Shelter serves young people aged 16–24 experiencing homelessness or housing instability across the Greater Toronto Area.

Many of the youth they support face complex challenges such as family breakdown, abuse, financial hardship, or a lack of stable support systems.

Their programs provide both immediate and long-term support through:

Emergency Residential Program
Stay in School Program
Life skills development
Mental health supports
Employment preparation
Housing and after-care services

By combining shelter with education, counselling, and life-skills development, YWS helps youth move beyond crisis situations and build stable, independent lives.

🚨 Current Initiatives & Needs

Community support plays a vital role in the work YWS does.

Current initiatives include:

• Adopt-A-Bed Program — helping provide a safe place for a youth to sleep
• Roommates Program — offering housing and mentorship for youth transitioning to independence
• Educational Outreach — sessions for schools and corporate groups to raise awareness about youth homelessness

🤝 How You Can Support

There are many meaningful ways to support Youth Without Shelter:

• Donate to help provide meals, safe housing, and programming
• Volunteer through tutoring, mentorship, events, and fundraising
• Attend community events and help spread awareness
• Advocate for youth support services

Every contribution — big or small — helps provide safety, opportunity, and hope to young people working to rebuild their lives.

"It was a great opportunity to be part, albeit in a small way, on the work YWS does. It was inspiring to the see the facilities and the great work the shelter provides to young individuals. The day was well organized and it felt like we were able to contribute to the amazing work they do!"

Youth Without Shelter continues to create a place where young people are supported, empowered, and given the opportunity to build a brighter future. 💛

🐾 Non-Profit Spotlight: Marley’s Pet Rescue

In Ontario, a small but dedicated team is creating second chances for animals who need it most.

Marley’s Pet Rescue is a volunteer-run, foster-based animal rescue dedicated to helping animals in need and finding them loving, permanent homes. Rather than operating a physical shelter, animals are placed in carefully selected foster homes where they receive individualized care, socialization, and the chance to decompress while waiting for their forever families.

Their mission is centered around animal welfare advocacy, responsible pet ownership, and giving vulnerable animals a second chance at life. Many of the animals who come into their care have experienced neglect, abandonment, or difficult beginnings, and they are committed to ensuring each one receives the medical care, stability, and compassion they deserve before being matched with the right adopter.

As a small, grassroots rescue, every adoption represents a life changed — not only for the animal but also for the family who welcomes them home. They believe deeply in the human–animal bond and in the power of community to help create better futures for animals who need it most.

💛 Why It Began

Marley’s Pet Rescue was founded in honour of Marley, a Cocker Spaniel who inspired a deep passion and dedication to animal advocacy, health, and rescue.

Marley played a significant role in shaping the understanding of the bond between animals and people — embodying loyalty, kindness, and unconditional love.

Through Marley’s legacy, the rescue was created to help animals in need, advocate for their wellbeing, and give them the second chance they deserve.

🐶 Who They Serve & Their Impact

Marley’s Pet Rescue primarily serves animals in need of safe placement, as well as families looking to adopt responsibly.

By operating as a foster-based rescue, they are able to provide individualized care and truly understand each animal’s personality, needs, and temperament before adoption.

Their impact comes from:

Rescuing animals in need
Providing foster-based rehabilitation and care
Ensuring thoughtful adoption matches
Advocating for animal welfare and responsible pet ownership
Through these efforts, animals are able to transition from uncertain situations into stable, loving homes.

🚨 Current Initiatives & Needs

As a small volunteer-run rescue, Marley’s Pet Rescue relies heavily on the support of the community.

Their current focus is expanding their foster network so they can help more animals in need.

Ongoing needs include:

Foster homes for dogs and cats
Donations to help cover veterinary care and food
Supplies through their Amazon wish list
Community awareness about adoption and rescue work
Because they do not receive government funding, every donation and volunteer contribution directly impacts the animals in their care.

🤝 How You Can Support

There are many ways to support Marley’s Pet Rescue:

• Adopt a rescue animal
• Foster a pet in need
• Donate to help cover veterinary care, food, and supplies
• Share adoptable animals on social media
• Contribute items from their wish list

Even small acts of support help continue saving lives and finding animals their forever homes.

“Every animal deserves a chance to feel safe, loved, and valued. We hope to give as many animals as possible the second chance they deserve.”

Marley’s Pet Rescue is a reminder that compassion, community, and care can truly change lives — one animal at a time. 💛
