We are with heavy hearts and mourning the loss of one of Somalia's greatest legends, Khadijo Abdullahi, better known as Dalays who passed away a couple days ago in Toronto. Dalays pioneered music and entertainment in Somalia, she was a multi-talented, phenomenal woman best known for her singing, acting and dancing. Dalays was gifted, the way she captured a crowd and sang was beyond unique. This video via The Somali Museum of Minnesota showcases the last time Dalays publicly addressed an audience before falling ill. We are grateful for the path Dalays has paved for Somalis in entertainment and advocating for our liberation. A true icon that she is, we are praying for her and family and reflecting on her extraordinary achievements and talent. Inna Li'laahi Waina Ileyhi Raji'un.

The Somali Student Association of York is calling for the community to contact Minister Goodale and Minister Hussen to stop the deportation of Abdoul Abdi. This cruel practice of deportation and double punishment is unfortunately common within the Somali community. Please contact these two ministers to contest the chosen course of action. Our thoughts and prayers are with Abdoul and his family.

Thank you YFS for displaying solidarity with us during grievous times. ✊🏾✊🏾

We are still selling Somalia necklaces to raise money for folks back home. Stop by room 435 in the student center or message us to support!

The York Federation of Student continues to stand in solidarity with the Somali community. We send our unwavering love and support to those who have their lost loved ones in the heinous attacks in Somalia, and those who continue to search for their loved ones.

On October 14th 2017, two trucks packed with explosives had gone off in the Capital city of Somalia, Mogadishu. The bombing had resulted in 350 innocent deaths, over 500 casualties, and extreme damages to the community infrastructure. However, with this attack, it is important to recognize that this is not the only occurrence that has ultimately led to unsafe spaces and the loss of lives for the Somali community. Throughout the past year on its own, many lives have been targeted and lost and little is being done by those who hold power in government spaces. It’s also important to be cognizant of the lack of foreign aid provided to Somalia in light of these events;

We send love and power to the youth within the community that have taken steps to protect their spaces - including the Somali Students Association at York University that have and continue to unite and empower its youth. The YFS stands in solidarity with the Somali Community and urge students to get involved and show support to challenge these systems that continue to oppress marginalized communities.

The York Federation of Students would like to reaffirm our commitment to combatting and challenging oppression whether it is racism, sexism, Islamophobia, transphobia and all other forms of oppression that continue to plague our campus and our communities.
