A thoughtful review by community member

The Women by Kristin Hannah is the kind of historical fiction that feels both immersive and corrective - it doesn’t just tell a story, it insists on one being remembered. Centering on the women who served as nurses in the Vietnam War, the novel highlights a perspective that has long been pushed to the margins, and that alone makes it feel significant.

What Hannah does especially well is capture the disorienting duality of these women’s experiences: the intensity and chaos of wartime service, and the quieter, often lonelier battle of returning home to a country that didn’t quite know what to do with them. The friendships are a highlight and there’s a tenderness and ferocity to those bonds that feels earned, not sentimentalized. You really feel how these women become each other’s lifelines through it all.

We’re excited to announce our next talk in the Adoption Across the Life Course series, organized by Rudd Adoption Research Program Director Elsbeth Neil. This talk will take place next Tuesday, March 24.

During the session, our panelists will draw on the Adoptee Consciousness Model (ACM) to explore the diverse ways transracial adoptees experience adoption. Bringing together research and lived experience, they will examine how adoptees develop critical adoption consciousness and its implications for identity and mental health. We hope that you will join us for an important and thought provoking conversation!
