Waterloo Region ACORN delegations to City of Kitchener Council were successful! Inclusionary Zoning will be implemented in 2026 at the suggested 1% and 2% figures rather than the 0.25% and 0.5% desired by the developer lobbyists and some councillors.

We were only one part of a large group of delegations from Kitchener Citizens for Liveable Development and many other concerned citizens from across the spectrum.

Let's be clear, these suggested figures are not enough. We need pressure on the City and on the provincial government to raise these rates, not lower them. Developers profit from zoning and infrastructure, and it's completely reasonable to demand they pass back some of that enormous wealth to our community.

We won't stop fighting. Join us to be part of the fight!

🚨 Kitchener tenants β€” we need your voices!

Last year, Kitchener City Council approved an Inclusionary Zoning (IZ) policy, requiring new apartment buildings to include a percentage of affordable units that stay affordable long-term.

IZ was delayed to start in January 2026, and now some councillors are trying to delay it again and weaken it so much that it would barely create any affordable housing at all! SHAME!

⚠️ One proposal was to decrease the % of required affordable units in a new build down to 0.25-0.5% β€” that means a developer could construct a building with 400 units, and only 1 or 2 units would need to be affordable!

We need council to prioritize housing over corporate profits. Here’s how to take action:

πŸ”΄ 1. Join ACORN in the gallery at the Council Meeting!
πŸ“… Monday, Dec 15 – 7:00 PM
πŸ“ Kitchener City Hall Council Chambers, 200 King St W

πŸ—£ 2. Register to speak at the meeting
Go to form.kitchener.ca/COR/LEG/Delegation-form
Join us in the gallery - when your name is called, share why you think the city should prioritize affordable housing NOW!
DEADLINE TO REGISTER: MONDAY DEC 15TH AT 5PM

☎️ 3. Call and email City Council
Use our online action to email all councillors in under 30 seconds: tinyurl.com/KitchenerIZNOW

Find councillor phone numbers on the City of Kitchener website at kitchener.ca/council-and-city-administration/mayor-and-council/city-council/ and call them β€” tell them NO delays, NO weakening, we need real affordable housing!

πŸ’₯ Together, we can make council listen and protect tenants’ right to affordable homes.
