Language Advocacy Day

Language Advocacy Day Language Access Coalition of Canada, 2021 WHAT IS LANGUAGE ADVOCACY DAY? Let us know about the language-related issues you care about.

Inspired by over 40 years of continuous effort by the Joint National Committee for Languages (JNCL), the objective of Canadian Language Advocacy Day (LAD) is to build an informal coalition of language rights advocates, individuals and organizations who will participate in an informational advocacy day at Queen's Park in 2021. The long term objective is to establish an ongoing language policy forum

and explore the role of language within the context of social justice, education and economic recovery.

For the Canadian LAD to be successful, we need your help! Our task is to connect you with your representatives and language advocates and create briefings and guidance about the process to help you feel confident in pursuing your agenda. Take action today and support Canadian Language Advocacy Day 2021!

Thank you to the City of Toronto for recognizing Language Advocacy Day and for affirming language access as a matter of equity, inclusion, and public accountability.

Across Canada, linguistic diversity is a defining reality. Ensuring access to information, programs, and services in the languages people speak or sign is essential to meaningful participation in civic, social, and economic life—regardless of geography or jurisdiction.

This recognition reinforces an important national conversation: language access must be embedded across public systems at all levels of government. Symbolic acknowledgement matters, but sustained policy leadership, standards, and implementation are required to ensure language rights are upheld consistently across the country.

We recognize the advocates, community organizations, and partners whose collective efforts continue to advance language access nationwide. Together, we are working toward a Canada where language is never a barrier to inclusion or belonging.

Good moderation doesn’t just manage time—it keeps the conversation grounded in action.

Meet Craig Carter‑Edwards, a policy and communications veteran with more than 20 years of experience across federal and provincial systems. He helped guide the creation of the Language Access Coalition of Canada and has long advocated for social solutions to structural challenges.
As moderator, Craig will help connect policy, power, and real‑world impact—keeping the discussion focused on what language access as a civic right looks like in practice.
