On October 7, RISE by Amal Unite & Empower joined CPHR Newfoundland & Labrador for "Workforce Integration as a Retention Strategy," a virtual session with 30 attendees from across Atlantic Canada. Maryna Ponomarchuk and Hayley McLellan shared what RISE has learned working alongside NL employers. That included the difference between hiring and integration, and practical steps teams can start in the next 90 days.

The timing matters. The Atlantic provinces have the lowest immigrant retention in Canada. In Newfoundland and Labrador, only 45.6% of immigrants who arrived in 2017 were still here five years later (Statistics Canada, 2024).

One key takeaway: onboarding tells people how the job works, while integration tells them whether they belong. Most HR effort happens between the offer and week one, but newcomers tend to leave between months 3 and 18. Integration doesn't need a big program. Pick one touchpoint, give it an owner, and check back in 90 days.

One attendee said the session was a reminder "to follow up with the new hires weekly and to not assume everything is understood."

Thank you to CPHR NL for having us.

Today, Bloom by Amal Unite & Empower had the opportunity to bring a mindful session to the Avalon Holographics office. 🌱

We were glad to join the team for a lunchtime mindfulness and grounding session, led by Jill Holden of Modo Yoga St. John's. Jill shared simple, practical tools that anyone can use: grounding techniques, breath awareness, and mindful micro-breaks of just one or two minutes that help reset focus during a busy workday. It ended with a short guided practice the team can take back to their desks and home with them.

This is part of what we offer our industry partners. Through Bloom by Amal Unite & Empower, we support the wellbeing, connection, and sense of belonging of newcomers building their lives in Newfoundland and Labrador. At no cost to our partners, we bring tailored wellness experiences right into your workplace, delivered by local professional facilitators and open to your whole team.

Why does it matter? A newcomer who feels supported and rooted in their community is more likely to stay in their role, with your organization, and in NL. Wellbeing and retention go hand in hand.

Thank you to Avalon Holographics for welcoming us, and to Jill for a grounding hour.
