Barn Owl Update 🦉

Unfortunately, the owlet did not survive. However, we are seeing hopeful signs as the adult owls have already been observed mating again and may raise a second brood later this summer.

Looking ahead, we’re also planning to add cameras to four more nest boxes in 2026 so we can continue learning more about these remarkable birds and share their story with the community.

Thank you for following along and supporting Barn Owl conservation. Stay tuned for more updates!

A Late-Night Food Run 🦉

An adult barn owl returns to its nest box carrying a vole. While the black-and-white footage may look a little spooky, it gives us a rare look at what happens after dark.

Barn owls rely on exceptional hearing to locate prey in the dark, helping them find small mammals like voles and mice even when they can't be seen.

An Owlet Has Hatched! 🦉

After spending about 30 days developing inside the egg, a tiny owlet has finally emerged. In these first days of life, the parents work tirelessly, bringing small pieces of mice, voles, and other prey to feed their young.

This is also one of the most vulnerable stages for the owlet. The parents must keep it warm and protected until it is able to regulate its own body temperature.

Something eggciting is happening at Terra Nova Park 🦉

Three barn owl eggs were laid this April in one of the City of Richmond’s nest boxes and now we’re waiting for the first chick to hatch!

The Barn Owl Nest Box Program includes 15 nest boxes located in park spaces, with cameras added to some boxes so we can safely monitor these amazing birds.

Stay tuned for updates as this owl family grows!

Just a couple of tadpoles living their best swamp life. 🌱🐸
Tadpoles can take weeks to months to transform into frogs, slowly growing legs and absorbing their tails as they mature. There are many of them living in the pond right now!
