Position Summary

The Senior Accountant is responsible for the accuracy, integrity, and day-to-day management of BCMA's accounting records and financial reporting.

The role ensures compliance with Canadian Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations (ASNPO), Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) requirements applicable to registered charities, funding agreements, and BCMA policies. Working closely with the General Treasurer, Executive Board, centre officials, auditors, and finance staff, the Senior Accountant supports budgeting, grant and fund accounting, audit readiness, internal controls, and responsible stewardship of donor and organizational funds.

BC MUSLIM ASSOCIATION CONDEMNS HATE-MOTIVATED DEATH THREATS AT FLEETWOOD ISLAMIC CENTRE, DEMANDS ZERO TOLERANCE FOR ISLAMOPHOBIA

RICHMOND, B.C. — The B.C. Muslim Association (BCMA) strongly condemns a targeted incident of hate-motivated vandalism, death threats, and anti-Muslim intimidation discovered at the Fleetwood Islamic Centre in Surrey, declaring zero tolerance for hate crimes in British Columbia.

Congregants arriving at the facility discovered hostile graffiti—including the phrases “Get out or die!” and “Islam is Trash!”—along with raw bacon placed on door handles and windows.

We will not tolerate hate crimes or attempts to intimidate our community. When perpetrators write ‘get out,’ they ignore B.C. history. Muslims have lived, worked, and contributed in British Columbia since at least the 1860s—from Muslim residents observed in Victoria as recorded in Matthew Macfie’s 1865 historical account, to Southeast Asian Muslim seamen officially recorded in the 1881 New Westminster census.

For over 160 years, Muslim Canadians have been good citizens devoted to the well-being of First Nations, British Columbians, and all Canadians. Our brothers and sisters should never enter their place of worship confronted by messages threatening their lives. Explicit death threats at a place of worship strike directly at the safety and dignity of our entire community.

For Canadian Muslims, threats against places of worship carry severe historical trauma, recalling the devastating 2017 Quebec City mosque attack. This incident reflects an ongoing nationwide issue: Statistics Canada reported over 4,700 police-reported hate crimes in 2025, with anti-Muslim incidents remaining at historically elevated levels.

The BCMA calls for immediate action on three fronts:
- Law Enforcement: A comprehensive, high-priority hate-crime investigation by local authorities to hold those responsible fully accountable.
- Elected Officials: Explicit public rejections of Islamophobia, accompanied by proactive security funding and resources for vulnerable faith institutions.
- Community Vigilance: Continued solidarity from civic leaders, faith organizations, and all British Columbians to reject religious hatred in all forms.

An attack intended to intimidate one community must instead strengthen our collective resolve. Hate will not divide us, but protecting places of worship requires proactive protection before hostile words escalate into physical violence.

Mission accomplished

🔥 BCMA & Islamic Relief Canada Respond to Wildfire Evacuees in the Okanagan 🤝❤️

Recent completed operation 

Alhamdulillah, the BC Muslim Association (BCMA) and Islamic Relief Canada (IRC) have been working together on the ground to support individuals and families affected by the wildfires and evacuations in the Penticton area.

After speaking with those assisting evacuees, we identified some of the most urgently needed personal-care items, including:

🪥 Toothbrushes & toothpaste
🧴 Mouthwash & dental floss
🪒 Razors & shaving cream
🧼 Deodorant & shampoo
💅 Nail hygiene kits
🌸 Feminine hygiene products
☀️ Sunscreen and other essential items

BCMA and IRC immediately procured the requested supplies and transported them to the Kelowna Islamic Centre, where staff and local volunteers came together to prepare hygiene kits for distribution to evacuees.

🚗💨 From purchasing and loading the supplies to assembling the packages, this was truly a community effort. We are grateful to everyone who stepped forward and volunteered their time to help families during this difficult period.

We also purchased snacks and beverages with the intention of delivering them to firefighters in Penticton. Upon arrival, we were informed that firefighters were well supplied and encouraged us to redirect the items to evacuees. The snacks and drinks were therefore donated to Princess Margaret Secondary School in Penticton, where evacuees were being supported and community game nights were being organized.

📦 Emergency hygiene supplies were also delivered, and our team had the opportunity to connect with members of the OneSky Community and those assisting at the evacuation shelter.

🎥 Throughout the response, we documented the efforts of volunteers and heard Islamic Relief Canada representatives, and the Kelowna branch about the importance of organizations and communities working together during times of crisis.

This effort demonstrates what can be accomplished when organizations, volunteers and communities come together with compassion and a shared purpose.

May Allah (SWT) protect everyone affected by the wildfires, grant strength and safety to our firefighters and emergency personnel, and reward every volunteer and donor who has contributed to these relief efforts. Ameen. 🤲

BC Muslim Association Responds to B.C. Wildfire Emergency, Coordinates Support and Province-Wide Prayers for Rain

British Columbia
August 9, 2026

The BCMA is closely monitoring the rapidly developing wildfire emergency across British Columbia and is coordinating with its branches in affected and surrounding regions to assess community needs and determine how the Association can be of assistance.

With the Province of British Columbia under a state of emergency and wildfires continuing to threaten communities, thousands of residents have been forced to evacuate their homes. Approximately 22,000 people are currently under evacuation orders, with thousands more on evacuation alert.

Among the communities facing significant danger is the District of Summerland, where approximately 12,000 residents were ordered to evacuate as the Bald Range wildfire advanced rapidly toward the community.

More than 100 wildfires are currently burning across British Columbia, many of which have started within the past week.

In response to this emergency, BCMA is coordinating with its outer branches to assess conditions on the ground, identify areas of need, and determine how the Association and the Muslim community can best provide assistance to those affected.

At the same time, the Religious Services Department of the BC Muslim Association is coordinating Salat al-Istisqa (the Islamic prayer for rain) across numerous BCMA branches. Community members are encouraged to participate and join together in prayer for beneficial rain, the safety of affected communities, and relief from the devastating wildfires.

BCMA asks members of the Muslim community to remain attentive to official evacuation orders and emergency instructions and to be prepared to support affected communities as needs are identified.

Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who has been displaced, those whose homes and livelihoods are threatened, and the firefighters, first responders, emergency personnel, volunteers, and community organizations working tirelessly to protect lives and communities throughout British Columbia.

May Allah (SWT) protect all communities affected by the fires, grant safety and strength to those responding to this emergency, protect people and their homes from harm, and bless British Columbia with beneficial rain that brings relief and helps bring these fires to an end. Ameen.
