Ocean Legacy is a Canadian-based non-profit organization initiated in 2013 with the goal to end the plastic pollution crisis. Ocean Legacy has a proven four-pillar approach called EPIC, which integrates Education, Policy, Infrastructure Development and Clean-up. These pillars are used to co-create innovative solutions which engage the public, media, ENGOs, government agencies, indigenous governanc

e and other businesses globally to achieve plastic-free lands and waters. The OL has developed the first and largest scale Plastic Pollution Emergency Response Facility in Canada that is focused on finding solutions to recycle marine plastic gear and pollution. The Facility has launched Ocean Legacy as an international leader in plastic pollution reduction, collection and processing, showcasing successful methods in stimulating the plastic circular economy across 7 formal depots which have now diverted over 2.7 million pounds of debris that would have otherwise ended up in landfill or re-entered the natural environment. The program also provides a prolific online education academy in three languages and growing, as well as works to improve mitigative plastic pollution policy measures with all levels of government. Currently, the program has removed more then 3 million pounds of plastic pollution from over 2500km of coastline, creating over 1200 meaningful employment opportunities and has catalyzed long-term tools communities need to steward their natural environment. Ocean Legacy has performed and led global plastic pollution field operations for over nine years, becoming one of Canada’s most experienced field teams to collect, remove, sort and recycle materials collected from clean-up efforts and currently works with over 500 entities across an international community.

Join us for Net Stripping Volunteer Days at Ocean Legacy Foundation.

There are some nets that have been dropped off that need to be taken apart and stripped. Fishing nets are one of the most difficult forms of marine debris to process, and we need community support to help prepare these materials for recycling and transformation into circular products.

We’re organizing monthly volunteer days at our Richmond facility where participants can help strip, sort, and support the recovery of ghost gear and industry items collected from coastlines and marine environments!

Send us an email at [email protected] to participate!

Every piece of plastic has a story.

Some are used for minutes.
Others remain in our environment for centuries.

Plastic pollution doesn’t disappear when it leaves our sight. It can travel through rivers, coastlines, and oceans, breaking down into smaller fragments that impact wildlife, ecosystems, and communities around the world.

The good news? Every action matters.

Whether you’re reducing single-use plastics, participating in a cleanup, supporting better recycling systems, or simply starting a conversation, you’re helping build a future with less plastic pollution.

This Oceans Week, remember that protecting our oceans starts with the choices we make every day.

As Oceans Week continues, we want to showcase another powerful submission to Ocean Legacy Foundation's Design Contest.

Please join us in welcoming Audra Brousseau from Surrey, British Columbia.

Audra's submission, "Entangled No More," shines a light on one of the most persistent threats facing marine wildlife: ghost gear. The design features a humpback whale crossing paths with abandoned fishing netting, while a hidden heart within the artwork symbolizes the care, stewardship, and positive impact that can exist when we take action to protect our oceans.

A graphic artist and passionate whale advocate, Audra shares a personal connection to these magnificent animals. Several years ago, she participated in a whale naming initiative and named a humpback calf Zindago (also known as Schooner), whose mother is Zig Zag. Living on the British Columbia coast, she closely follows the stories and challenges facing whales in our region, inspiring the message behind this piece.

"Entangled No More" reminds us that ghost gear is often an unseen threat beneath the surface, yet its impacts on marine life can be devastating. Through creativity and storytelling, Audra encourages us to recognize these challenges and work toward solutions that keep whales and other marine species safe.

Thank you, Audra, for sharing your artwork and helping raise awareness about ghost gear and its impacts on ocean ecosystems.

The ocean connects us all.

This Oceans Week, take a moment to learn more about the challenges facing our blue planet, and the solutions that can help protect it for generations to come.

Which fact surprised you the most?

As we continue celebrating Oceans Week, we're excited to highlight another inspiring submission to Ocean Legacy Foundation's Design Contest.

Please join us in welcoming Rashmi Viranga Gamage from Sri Lanka.

Rashmi's submission, "Echoes of the Wounded," reflects the hopes of marine species striving to survive in clean, healthy oceans while leaving behind the polluted waters they are too often forced to inhabit. The artwork serves as a powerful reminder of the impact plastic pollution and marine debris have on ocean ecosystems around the world.

Growing up in Sri Lanka, an island nation deeply connected to the ocean, Rashmi has witnessed firsthand how pollution affects coastal environments. These experiences inspired the creation of this piece and its message of awareness, responsibility, and hope for the future.

Through art, "Echoes of the Wounded" gives a voice to marine life and encourages all of us to consider the role we play in protecting the ocean.

Thank you, Rashmi, for sharing your creativity and helping raise awareness about one of the greatest environmental challenges facing our planet today.

Submissions are still open! If you have artwork, photography, digital designs, illustrations, or other creative works inspired by ocean conservation, there's still time to enter Ocean Legacy Foundation's Oceans Week Design Contest before submissions close.

Together, we can use creativity to inspire action and build a future free from plastic pollution.

We are still looking for hard-working people to join our Plastic Pollution Emergency Response Facility's crew that assists in managing incoming debris from the ocean, shoreline and marine industrial cleanups from the Pacific Northwest region.

The work consists of processing marine debris such as rope, buoys, barrels, oyster baskets, and styrofoam through different stations. This position involves significant physical labour, standing and bending for long periods of time, and requires the ability to complete repetitive tasks, such as untangling and handling rope.

The position requires the team member to follow standard operating procedures, adopt safe work practices and maintain a clean work environment in accordance with BC Occupational Health and Safety regulations.

While most work activities are completed indoors, outdoor activities in any weather conditions are also part of the work environment. We frequently receive ocean-scented debris, so this job calls for a comfortable tolerance around strong smells and getting your hands (gloves) dirty when handling these materials.

Start date: May 4, 2026
Length of Contract: 8 weeks

Today marks the beginning of Oceans Week, a time to celebrate our connection to the ocean while raising awareness about the challenges it faces.

We are excited to introduce the first official participant in Ocean Legacy Foundation's Oceans Week Design Contest: Ekaterina Seromakha from Russia.

Her submission, "Plastic Bag Whale," is a mixed-media artwork created using recycled plastic bags, acrylic paint, and canvas. The piece portrays a whale as a symbol of wisdom, resilience, and the beauty of marine life, while drawing attention to the growing issue of plastic pollution in our oceans.

Through art, Ekaterina transforms discarded materials into a powerful message about conservation, reminding us that waste can become a catalyst for creativity, conversation, and change.

Thank you, Ekaterina, for sharing your talent and helping inspire action for healthier oceans.

There is still time to participate! We will be accepting design submissions for two more days, so if you have artwork, illustrations, digital designs, photography, or creative pieces inspired by ocean conservation, we encourage you to submit your entry before the deadline.

Let's celebrate Oceans Week by using creativity to spark awareness and inspire solutions for a plastic-free future.
