Meet Our New Rotary President: Rhonda Cunningham

The Rotary Club of Northumberland Sunrise is proud to welcome Rhonda Cunningham as our President for the 2026-2027 Rotary year!

For many across Northumberland, Rhonda is a familiar face. As CEO of the Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation, she has dedicated more than 30 years to helping build a stronger, healthier community. Since joining the Foundation in 1995, Rhonda has helped raise more than $100 million in support of local healthcare and has earned some of the highest professional distinctions in philanthropy, including becoming one of only a select few Canadians to achieve the prestigious Fellow of the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (FAHP) designation.

But beyond her remarkable professional accomplishments, Rhonda is passionate about community service, relationship-building, and making a difference, qualities that make her a natural Rotary leader.

As part of our "Get to Know Your President", we asked Rhonda a few questions:

Why did you join Rotary?

"I care about my community, and I've always wanted to play a role in strengthening the organizations that are doing meaningful work in support of others. Joining Rotary connected me with like-minded individuals who share a commitment to service. There is an energy that happens when we come together with a shared purpose, using our skills and compassion to help provide solutions to life's challenges. That collective spirit is what inspires me and keeps me coming back."

What is your key priority as Club President?

"As our club continues to grow, I want to ensure we remain connected as members. Growth brings opportunity, but also the responsibility to preserve the culture so many have worked hard to create. My focus will be on strengthening communication, engagement, and the systems that will support our long-term success while staying true to who we are as a Club."

What's something people may not know about you?

"I'm a true crime ju**ie! Dateline, 48 Hours, and 20/20 are some of my favourites!"

Rhonda's leadership journey has always been guided by service, compassion, hard work, and a belief in the power of community. We are excited for the year ahead and grateful for the vision, experience, and heart she brings to our Club.

Please join us in congratulating and welcoming President Rhonda Cunningham!
👏☀️

A Well-Deserved Thank You to Nizar Hassam

This past Saturday, members of the Rotary Club of Northumberland Sunrise gathered for a special appreciation breakfast, hosted at the beautiful home of member Lisa Schokking, to celebrate and thank our outgoing President, Nizar Hassam, for an outstanding year of leadership and service.

What makes Nizar's contributions even more remarkable is everything he balanced along the way. Over the past year, he and Jess welcomed a new baby, Jess completed her MBA, Nizar began a new career opportunity, and their family prepared for a move to a new home. Through it all, he remained dedicated to leading our club with enthusiasm, compassion, and a commitment to service above self.

Under Nizar's leadership, our club continued to make a positive impact in the lives of those we serve throughout Northumberland County.

His steady guidance, positivity, and willingness to step up whenever needed have helped strengthen our club and our connection to the community.

On behalf of our members, the organizations we support, and the countless people touched by Rotary's work, thank you, Nizar, for your leadership, your dedication, and your generous spirit.
We are grateful for all you have done and look forward to seeing the continued impact you'll make in our community.

💙 Congratulations on a successful year, and thank you for helping make a difference.

🌅💙

Our Northumberland Sunrise Rotary meetings are every other Wednesday, 7am at Arthur's Pub and if you join us, you'll find it's always a great reminder why an early start is worth it.

At this week's meeting we welcomed new member Dianne Pickett, and heard from Elizabeth Kiser as part of our Classification Talk series. Professionally, an interior designer with a passion for her work (beautiful by the way) but it was the in-betweens, delivered in a warm southern drawl, of a life fully lived that had the room. As a new Rotarian, Elizabeth brings a perspective that fits right into the spirit of our club: design has purpose, movement is the medicine that keeps us strong, and happiness is available to us at every leg of the journey. Ask Elizabeth how she's doing sometime. She'll smile and say: Happy. How are you?

If you've ever been curious about Rotary, we're a service club with purpose. We show up for our community, we lead, we build, and we do it alongside people like Elizabeth. Guests are always welcome.

There's something about sitting in a room full of Rotarians from across the district that reminds you why you joined in the first place. Members of our Northumberland Sunrise Rotary was at the District Assembly 7070 this past weekend in Scarborough alongside fellow Rotarians including Port Hope and Cobourg Rotary. We came home with new connections, a sharpened sense of direction, and a lot of anticipation watching our incoming president-elect Rhonda Cunningham step into everything she'll bring to the role.
It was a great day of fellowship and shared learning, and we're bringing it all back to Create Lasting Change in our community.

This Wednesday morning, our Sunrise Rotary Club had the privilege of hearing from Transition House Executive Director, Christian, about the incredible work being done to support individuals experiencing homelessness in our community.

The conversation highlighted not only the challenges many are facing, but also the compassion, resources, and hope that Transition House is providing every day. From emergency support to creating pathways toward stability, their impact is truly meaningful.

Thank you, Christian, for sharing your time, insight, and the important work your team continues to do for some of our community’s most vulnerable residents.

At Rotary, we believe in service above self, and mornings like this remind us how important it is to come together to support organizations making a real difference locally.
