Honouring Our Veterans: Alexander Taylor Page

Today, we proudly honour the memory and service of Alexander Taylor Page (1921–2016), a dedicated veteran and valued member of Royal Canadian Legion Kanata Branch 638.

Alexander enlisted with the Canadian Grenadier Guards in June 1940, serving with distinction during World War II. Among his many operational deployments, he fought in the pivotal Battle of Falaise in Normandy. In recognition of his courage and extraordinary sacrifice in the liberation of France, he was named a Chevalier of the National Order of the Legion of Honour by the French Republic and awarded the Napoleon Medal.

Following his military service, Alexander enjoyed a fulfilling 28-year career with Petro-Canada in Montreal before moving to the Ottawa area. Here in Kanata, we were privileged to count him among our comrades at Branch 638, where his warm presence and enduring commitment to the veteran community were deeply appreciated by all who knew him.

Alexander also took great pride in supporting the youth in our community through his ongoing work with the cadets at Connaught Ranges. He spent time sharing his wartime experiences with the cadets and took part in presenting them with their awards, helping to pass the torch of remembrance and dedication to the next generation.

We express our enduring gratitude for Alexander Page’s service to Canada and his lasting contributions to our Legion family.

📸 Wartime memories and photos shared with heartfelt thanks to former ‘Contact’ editor Garry Fancy and the family.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.

Generations Standing Together for Remembrance ❤️🇨🇦

Our 2026 Poppy Campaign is in full swing across the community!

A big thank-you to the fantastic high school students stepping up to complete their 40 volunteer hours by staffing our poppy tables, and to our dedicated comrades like Bob, proudly holding the Poppy flag high. Whether it’s youth learning the value of service or our seasoned veterans leading the way, every poppy worn honours those who served.

When you see our tables out in the stores this week, please stop by, say hello, and wear your poppy with pride. Tap-to-donate is available at our tables for easy giving!

Ordinary Seaman Robert Wilfred Roy Grant
Born on June 23, 1926, in Oyster Ponds, Nova Scotia, Robert Wilfred Roy Grant was the son of Bessie M. (Sceles) and Charles Francis Grant. As a teenager, he worked as a steelworker in Trenton, Nova Scotia, but answered the call of duty just three days before his 18th birthday, enlisting in the Royal Canadian Navy on June 20, 1944.

Following his initial posting aboard HMCS Queen Charlotte in Prince Edward Island, Ordinary Seaman Grant went on to serve along the eastern Canadian coastline and out of the key naval hub of Halifax. Over the course of the war and the immediate post-war period, his service saw him aboard several notable Canadian warships, including:

HMCS Micmac (R10) — the first Tribal-class destroyer built in a Canadian shipyard, HMCS Huron (G24/281) & HMCS Iroquois (G89/280), HMCS Qu’Appelle (264)Robert was honourably discharged on September 21, 1946.

Life After Service & Legion Fellowship

Returning to civilian life, Robert built an accomplished career in the printing industry, serving as a Product Manager with the Queen’s Printer in Ottawa and later in Victoria, British Columbia. On July 22, 1949, he married Betty Beryl (Wamback), and together they raised two daughters. A proud supporter of fellow veterans, Robert has been an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion for 44 years with the Esquimalt Dockyard Branch in Victoria and then moved to with Kanata Branch 638 in 2020.

Service runs deep in the Grant family. Robert’s father, Charles Francis Grant, was a First World War veteran who served overseas in Belgium and Germany with the 25th Battalion (Nova Scotia Ri**es), and his uncle, Harry Sceles, also served bravely in WWI.

That legacy of service thrives today at our own Branch through his daughter, Brenda. An integral part of our community, Brenda has served on numerous committees, held the role of Branch Secretary, currently serves as our Membership Chair, Youth Education Chair, and Bingo coordinator and proudly leads the Highland Pipe Band as pipe major.

We are deeply grateful to Robert Wilfred Roy Grant and the Grant family for their enduring devotion and sacrifice in service to Canada.

As we wear our poppies this Remembrance period, we honour veterans like Ordinary Seaman Robert Grant and thank families like the Grants, whose dedicated service spans generations. Please support our annual Poppy Campaign—every poppy worn honours their sacrifice and supports our veterans and their families in need.

Lest We Forget.

🌺 Honouring Our Veterans: Brigadier-General (Ret’d) Jean-Paul Leclerc, CD

Charter President, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 638 (Kanata)

If you visit Branch 638 and look at our wall of Past Presidents, you will see Brigadier-General Jean-Paul Leclerc at the very start of our branch history. When Kanata received its Legion charter in 1989, General Leclerc stepped up to serve as our very first president.

Behind that leadership in our community was a lifetime of service in uniform:

Korean War Veteran: General Leclerc answered the call to serve during the Korean War.

A Lifetime in Uniform: Following the Korean conflict, his military career took him through critical logistics, command, and staff appointments across Canada—including service at CFB Valcartier and National Defence Headquarters (NDHQ) in Ottawa—and them ultimately achieving the rank of Brigadier-General.

Building Branch 638: After retiring from the Canadian Armed Forces, his mission shifted to serving his fellow veterans at home. Alongside his wife, Claire—who gave countless hours to our branch and the Ladies’ Auxiliary—General Leclerc provided the steady hand and organizational leadership needed to establish a dedicated Legion home right here in Kanata.

Carrying the Torch: The Poppy Campaign 🌺

Leaders like General Leclerc founded Branch 638 on a promise that no veteran in our community would ever stand alone. As we launch our annual Poppy Campaign, his service reminds us why the poppy remains such a powerful symbol of remembrance, sacrifice, and hope.

Every poppy worn and every dollar contributed helps support local veterans, transitioning service members, and military families with vital medical, housing, and emergency assistance.

This Poppy season, when you pin that small red flower close to your heart, remember the generations who served before us—and the veterans in our own community whose stories continue to inspire us.

📸 Wartime memories and photos shared with heartfelt thanks to former ‘Contact’ editor Garry Fancy and the family.

🌺 When you wear your poppy, you honour veterans like Brigadier-General Jean-Paul Leclerc—and you help Branch 638 carry their legacy forward. 🌺

Lest We Forget.
