My Canadian Home.

There are quilts that keep you warm, and then there are quilts that feel like home. My Canadian Home is one of those quilts. It’s more than fabric and thread. It’s a piece of my family’s story stitched together with scraps of colour, memories, and a whole lot of love. It carries a little bit of where I come from and a whole lot of the woman who came before me.

My grandma came to Canada from Holland with a courage I still don’t think I fully understand. She left behind everything she knew and stepped into a completely new life. She chose Canada. She chose a farm. She chose a life with my grandpa. And together, they raised five kids and built a home in a place that was once completely unfamiliar. Somehow, in the middle of all that change, she made people feel at home.

That was Grandma. You didn’t have to ask if you could come in. You didn’t have to wonder if there would be coffee. You certainly didn’t leave hungry. She had a way of noticing what people needed before they ever had to say it. Her hospitality wasn’t something she put on for people, it was simply who she was. Her home was warm because she was warm.

I feel incredibly lucky to have one of her quilts. There’s something pretty special about wrapping yourself in something made by the hands of someone you love. It’s not just a quilt anymore. It becomes a connection. A little piece of them that somehow gets to keep living.

Every time I make something for JJ.Handmade, I think about her. I think about her hands, her home, her kitchen, her coffee pot, the way she welcomed people, and the way she cared without making a big deal about it. I think about how much of a legacy can be built in the ordinary things, a quilt, a meal, a cup of coffee, an open door, a place at the table.

My Canadian Home reminds me that the things we make with our hands can carry so much more than thread and fabric. They can carry stories. They can carry people. They can carry pieces of home forward.

So when I make something today, I hope a little bit of Grandma finds its way into it too, warmth, the welcome, the care, and the reminder that sometimes the simplest things we make and give are the things people remember the longest.

This quilt isn’t just a piece of my Canadian home. It’s a piece of her. And I’m pretty honoured to carry it forward.

Dusty’s convinced that if he dramatically flops over like this, I’ll quit fussing with the quilt and focus on him instead…. Bold strategy.

Today at Valley Graze reminded me why I love doing this work. I had the joy of selling a quilt to Gail and honestly, the quilt was just the doorway to a much bigger conversation.

She’s retired ER nurse from Vancouver and you can feel that depth the moment you talk with her. There’s a steadiness that comes from years of caring for people on their hardest days. What started as her curiosity about the quilt turned into an open, honest conversation about mental health in emergency services. No stigma, no hesitation, just two people who understood the weight of the work and the importance of talking about it.

Moments like that remind me why JJ Handmade exists. Quilts are comfort, yes, but they’re also connection. They make space for stories, healing, and those unexpected conversations that leave you feeling a little more seen.

Grateful for Gail and the reminder that community shows up in the most ordinary places.

✨✨✨Update: The books have now been republished and are ready to order. Thank you all for your patience and understanding as I worked through the misprint issue. I’m grateful for your support and excited to share the corrected edition with you! ✨✨✨

Hi everyone,

I want to share an important update regarding Faith On Shift Devotional book. A small number of early copies were printed with a misprint, and I’ve been working directly with Amazon KDP to resolve the issue. The corrected version is now live, but Amazon isn’t able to send replacement copies or provide me with buyer information.

Because of that, I don’t have a way to identify who received the misprinted copies. If you purchased Faith On Shift, or know someone who did, I’m more than happy to personally send you an updated copy. You can email me or send a DM so I can get a corrected version to you as soon as they’re available.
📬 [email protected]

Alternatively, you can return your book to Amazon as a manufactured defect and reorder the latest corrected copy. Amazon will process that directly for you.

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and support. I’m committed to owning the mistake and making it right.

Warmly,
Jess
