Many people in Merritt are feeling unsettled by the changes they see around town, and we understand why. It’s natural to wonder how community services fit into the broader challenges we’re all facing. These concerns come from wanting Merritt to be safe, healthy, and strong — and we respect that deeply.
Many of the people who come to us are long‑time Merritt residents who have worked here, raised families here, and contributed to this community for years. Those who are unhoused or living in social housing do not have the same options as families with access to a fridge and stove, which makes their food needs more immediate and more complex. Our responsibility — and our accreditation through Food Banks Canada — requires us to treat every person with dignity, fairness, and compassion.
We know there are stories circulating in the community, and some of them are simply not accurate. On rare occasions, food may be misused or resold, and when concerns are brought forward, we investigate and take appropriate steps within national guidelines. But misinformation has begun to spread in ways that are hurting the very service that helps our neighbours survive.
The food we provide goes to people living in Merritt and the surrounding Nicola Valley. Most of the individuals we help are our neighbours — people doing their best to get through difficult times. And while the issues of addiction, homelessness, and social disorder are real, withholding food does not reduce them. Hunger creates desperation; nourishment creates the possibility of change.
Right now, we need the community’s support more than ever. Monetary donations are especially critical. They allow us to purchase fresh food, meet dietary needs, fill gaps when shelves run low, and keep our operations running safely and responsibly. Every dollar directly supports local families, seniors, parents, and persons with disabilities who rely on us. We are not governement funded and that is why we must rely on donations from within our community.
Our mission is simple: feed people with compassion and respect. Caring for one another — especially during challenging times — is part of what makes the Nicola Valley resilient. If you have questions or concerns, we welcome you to reach out or come for a tour. We are always happy to talk openly about how we operate and how we serve our community.
Thank you for your continued generosity, your concern, and your dedication to the Nicola Valley. Your support keeps our doors open, our shelves stocked, and hope alive for the people who need it most.
