🏆 2019 Inductee Spotlight: Tom Craig🏆

Hailing from Sarnia, Ontario, Tom Craig built a reputation as both a skilled driver and talented mechanic, earning success across multiple eras of drag racing.

Craig first made his mark on the national stage in 1971, capturing a class victory at the prestigious U.S. Nationals, one of the most respected events in the sport. That early achievement set the tone for a career defined by performance, consistency, and technical expertise.

Throughout the years, Craig continued to excel in both driving and race car preparation. In 1997, he scored two victories in National Muscle Car Association competition and established himself as a class record holder. His momentum carried into the following seasons, where he dominated the National Street Car Association, becoming the 1998 and 1999 World Champion while also capturing the series championship titles in both years.

Craig’s success extended across numerous major racing organizations. He was a winner in CANAM Stock/Super Stock competition and also claimed victories in the Ontario Street Car Association, proving his ability to compete in a wide range of highly competitive classes.

As both a driver and mechanic, Tom Craig exemplified the hands-on spirit of grassroots drag racing. His achievements across national and regional series cemented his place among Canada’s accomplished drag racers and helped carry the legacy of Canadian competitors on the international stage.

🏆 2023 Inductee Spotlight: Sharon Fletcher 🏆

Sharon Fletcher’s impact on Canadian drag racing reaches far beyond the starting line, it shaped the sport itself.

Born into a car dealership family, Sharon grew up surrounded by performance machines and developed a lifelong passion for high-performance cars. Alongside her husband and mechanic, John Fletcher, she co-founded Fletcher Bros Performance Centres, building multiple thriving stores and performance shops that became cornerstones of the Canadian performance community.

In 1983, Sharon and John took a bold step that would change Canadian drag racing history by acquiring Dragway Park in Cayuga, Ontario. Under their leadership, the facility evolved into one of the country’s premier drag racing destinations, thanks to innovative programming and a relentless focus on professionalism and fan experience.

While many saw John trackside, Sharon was the strategic force behind the scenes. She oversaw finances, marketing, and operations, and even produced Drag Racing News, helping promote racers and grow the sport’s audience. Sharon had a keen eye for talent and played a key role in developing local fan favourites such as Al Billes and Tony Pontieri, helping elevate Canadian racers onto larger stages.

Her leadership and dedication did not go unnoticed. Sharon was named Drag Racing Person of the Year in 1989, and in 1996 received the prestigious D.R.A.W. Person of the Year award, recognizing her national impact on the sport.

Later, the Fletchers transformed St. Thomas Dragway into another vibrant racing venue, hosting major events including the prestigious Can-Am Nationals, where icons like John Force competed in front of Canadian fans.

Sharon’s passion extended beyond drag racing into reining horses, before she eventually returned to the sport through involvement with the Cobra Jet Program.

In 2011, her legacy was permanently cemented with induction into the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame, alongside John Fletcher and the legendary Mario Andretti.

🏆 2019 Inductee Spotlight: Joseph Van Overbeek 🏆

Joseph “Joe” Van Overbeek was a visionary builder and master mechanic from West Lorne, Ontario, whose craftsmanship and innovation left a lasting mark on the sport of drag racing.

In 1994, he founded Joe Van Overbeek Race Car Bodies, becoming the first Canadian manufacturer to produce carbon fiber race car bodies and related components. Through precision engineering and relentless dedication to performance, his work helped propel numerous teams to record-setting achievements in both the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) and the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA).

Joe’s influence extended far beyond the shop floor. His commitment to pushing boundaries was exemplified in his later work developing a carbon fiber body for the world’s fastest street-driven race car, piloted by Tom Bailey, which broke the five-second barrier in the quarter-mile at Hot Rod Magazine’s Drag Week.

More than the records and milestones, Joe’s legacy lives on in the racers he supported, the innovations he pioneered, and the standard of excellence he set for Canadian drag racing. His impact will continue to be felt every time a car he touched rolls to the starting line.
