🌿 Greenhouse Spotlight: Common Lilac (Syringa vulgaris) 🌿

Nothing says spring quite like the heady, nostalgic fragrance of the Common Lilac! This week, we are celebrating this timeless garden favorite.

Here are a few quick facts about this hardy beauty:

A Historic Traveller: Native to the Balkan Peninsula, lilacs were brought over by early European settlers and have been filling Canadian gardens with colour and scent since the 1700s.

That Incomparable Scent: The signature sweet, heavy aroma comes from a complex mix of volatile compounds (mostly lilac aldehydes) that are strongest on warm, sunny days to attract pollinators.

Propagation Tip: While they do throw up root suckers, the most reliable way to clone your favorite bush is by taking softwood cuttings in early summer, just after the flowers fade.

📍 Where to Leave Them:

🌿 Plant Spotlight: Trillium grandiflorum

With the greenhouse closing for the summer we are taking the greenhouse spotlight out for a walk. Our spotlight this week is shining on one of spring's most iconic and beautiful woodlands flowers: the Large-flowered Trillium (Trillium grandiflorum)! 🤍

This native beauty is always a highlight of the season. Here are a few fascinating facts about it:

🌱 Long-lived and hardy: This woodland perennial can thrive for many, many years in the right conditions.

3️⃣ Rule of Three: Its parts come in threes! Each plant has three leaves, three petals, and three sepals.

🐜 Ant Power: Trilliums have a mutual relationship with ants, which disperse their seeds in a process called myrmecochory.

🇨🇦 A Provincial Symbol: It’s famous as the floral emblem of Ontario. Being recognized as the official Provincial flower in 1937

🕰️ Slow-spreading rhizomes and is very difficult to grow from seed, often taking up to 7 years to flower!

Keep your eyes peeled on your next hike and drop a photo in the comments! 👇

🌿 HUGE THANK YOU, KEMPTVILLE! And a little call for help... 🌿

Wow, what an incredible Spring Plant Sale! Our shelves in the pot room are looking pretty bare, and that's thanks to your amazing support. We are so grateful to this community for making the sale such a huge success!

Now, as we wrap things up for the season and look ahead to next year, we need your help to fill those shelves back up.

Do you have any small pots, cell packs, or trays taking up space? We’d be happy to take them off your hands for our future growing!

Since the greenhouse is officially closing for the season this Friday, you are welcome to set your donations right by the door, and we will collect them.

Thank you for helping us keep the Kemptville Campus Greenhouse growing!

Farewell to Our Greenhouse Guardian

It’s a bittersweet day as we wrap up our season here at the greenhouse. We are saying a fond farewell to Gary, our resident grey tree frog.

Gary has spent the entire winter with us, serving faithfully as our "Greenhouse Guardian". We want to thank her for all her hard work keeping a watchful eye over the plants during the colder months.

As the weather warms up, Gary has been safely relocated back to her original home. While we will miss seeing her tucked away among the greenery, we’re happy she’s back where she belongs for the summer.

Greenhouse Spotlight: Citrus × meyeri 🍋

As we wrap up the season and prepare to close the greenhouse doors, our final spotlight is on this magnificent Meyer Lemon (Citrus × meyeri). It has been a pleasure to "babysit" this citrus over the winter. Seeing it thrive with lush foliage and a ripening fruit is a wonderful way to conclude our winter series.

A hybrid between a lemon and a mandarin orange, the Meyer is famous for its thin skin and sweet, floral juice. It’s a true testament to the patience required to overwinter tropicals, and it’s now ready for the summer sun.

Summer Series: Your Suggestions!
The greenhouse is closing, but the spotlights continue! We’re moving the focus to the high-growth summer season and want to know what you’d like to see featured.

What should we highlight next? You name it we'll feature it

Summer House Plants
Sun-Loving tropicals
Summer Edibles
Pollinator Favorites
Cacti and succulents
Trees and shrubs

A Note of Gratitude To our incredible community,

We are honestly struggling to find the words to describe today. To say it exceeded our wildest dreams would be an understatement—we are absolutely humbled by the overwhelming support you showed us.

Whether you stopped by to pick up something new for your garden, bid in the auction, or just enjoyed the BBQ and live music with us, thank you. Seeing so many familiar and new faces reminds us why we love what we do.

We also want to extend a massive thank you for your patience during the "crazy rush" this morning! We know it was a bit of a squeeze at times, and we appreciate you sticking with us through the excitement. We’ve already started brainstorming a new layout for next year to ensure a smoother flow for everyone.

Finally, a huge shout-out to the vendors, volunteers and helpers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this success possible. We couldn’t have done it without this team.

Our hearts are very full tonight. Thank you for growing with us!
