🌿 Greenhouse Spotlight: Common Lilac (Syringa vulgaris) 🌿
Nothing says spring quite like the heady, nostalgic fragrance of the Common Lilac! This week, we are celebrating this timeless garden favorite.
Here are a few quick facts about this hardy beauty:
A Historic Traveller: Native to the Balkan Peninsula, lilacs were brought over by early European settlers and have been filling Canadian gardens with colour and scent since the 1700s.
That Incomparable Scent: The signature sweet, heavy aroma comes from a complex mix of volatile compounds (mostly lilac aldehydes) that are strongest on warm, sunny days to attract pollinators.
Propagation Tip: While they do throw up root suckers, the most reliable way to clone your favorite bush is by taking softwood cuttings in early summer, just after the flowers fade.
