Meet Dan Groess, President of Kamloops Game Changers Society!

For Dan Groess, supporting local sports has always been about supporting the people who make our community what it is.

As the owner of A Groess Underground, Dan has made giving back to Kamloops a priority. From sponsoring local teams like the Kamloops Storm and Kamloops NorthPaws to getting involved in community initiatives, he believes that when we invest in our community, everyone benefits.

And sports are one of the most powerful places to make that investment.

Dan knows that being part of a team can shape someone's life long after the final whistle. Sports teach us how to work together, build confidence, handle challenges and form friendships that can last a lifetime.

But he also recognizes that athletes face pressures that aren't always visible from the stands.

The expectations to perform, the fear of letting teammates down, the disappointment of a tough loss and the pressure to keep pushing through can take a toll on anyone, regardless of their age or skill level.

That's why Dan is so passionate about the mission of Kamloops Game Changers Society.

Through the T.E.A.M. Fund (Together Empowering Athletes Mental Wellness), Dan hopes to see a Kamloops sports community where conversations around mental wellness are encouraged and athletes, parents and coaches have access to the tools and resources they need.

A community where coaches are equipped to support the whole athlete, parents feel confident having conversations about mental health, and young people understand that asking for help is a sign of strength.

The T.E.A.M. Fund is designed to make that possible by providing free workshops, seminars, education and resources to our local sports community.

For Dan, it's an opportunity to give back to the community he loves while helping shape a healthier future for the next generation of Kamloops athletes.

We're grateful to have Dan's leadership, community spirit and commitment to making a difference at Kamloops Game Changers.

The scariest thing in sports isn't losing.

It's feeling like you have nobody to talk to.

Imagine being a young athlete who loves their sport, but lately, something feels different.

The pressure to perform is getting heavier. A bad game stays with them long after they've left the rink or field. They're worried about disappointing their coach, their teammates, or the parents cheering from the sidelines.

But when someone asks how they're doing, they smile and say, "I'm fine."

Because sometimes admitting you're struggling feels scarier than losing the game.

At Kamloops Game Changers, we believe every athlete deserves to feel supported, whether they're competing for a championship or playing their very first season.

That's why we're working to bring mental wellness resources, education, and conversations to athletes, coaches, and parents throughout our community.

This Halloween, let's remember that some of the scariest things athletes face are the things we can't see.

And sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do is make sure they know someone is listening.

Every athlete deserves support, no matter what level they play at.

Sports can build confidence, friendships and resilience, but they can also come with pressure, anxiety, self-doubt and challenges that aren't always visible from the sidelines.

That's why Kamloops Game Changers Society created the T.E.A.M. Fund: Together Empowering Athletes Mental Wellness.

The T.E.A.M. Fund is dedicated to making mental wellness resources accessible to athletes of all ages, along with the parents and coaches who support them.

Through free seminars, workshops, training and educational resources, we want to give our sports community the tools to have healthier conversations, recognize when someone is struggling and build stronger support systems.

And when we say free, we mean it. We believe that financial barriers should never stand in the way of someone getting the knowledge and support they need.

Whether it's a young athlete learning to manage the pressure of competition, a parent trying to support their child through a difficult season or a coach looking to create a healthier team environment, the T.E.A.M. Fund is here for our entire sporting community.

Because strong athletes need strong support systems.

There are some names in hockey that fans never forget.

Mark Recchi, Joe Watson, and Corey Hirsch have each experienced the game at its highest levels, and on June 12, 2027, they're coming together in Kamloops for a very special evening.

The Breaking the Ice Gala, presented by Kamloops Game Changers Society, is bringing our community together for a night of hockey stories, memorable conversations, great food, and entertainment.

Mark Recchi is a three-time Stanley Cup Champion whose NHL career spanned more than two decades.

Joe Watson helped the Philadelphia Flyers win two Stanley Cups and remains one of the beloved names from the Broad Street Bullies era.

And Corey Hirsch, former NHL goaltender and mental health advocate, will be joining us as our emcee.

We're incredibly excited to welcome all three to Kamloops!

Guests can look forward to dinner, an engaging speaker series, a live Q&A, and dancing, all while helping us raise funds for the T.E.A.M. Fund.

Our goal is to develop free mental wellness workshops and educational opportunities for athletes, coaches, and parents in our community.

The Breaking the Ice Gala has a NEW date!

After a lot of conversations, planning and schedule-checking with our speakers, board, sponsors and partners, we’re excited to officially announce that Breaking the Ice will return on:

June 12, 2027

The extra time gives us the opportunity to build the kind of event we want this gala to be, while keeping the heart of it exactly where it belongs: supporting mental wellness in sports and creating resources for athletes, coaches and families in our community.

The Breaking the Ice Gala is being rescheduled.

After careful consideration and conversations with Mark Recchi, Corey Hirsch, Joe Watson, our sponsors, community partners and others involved in the event, Kamloops Game Changers Society has made the decision to move the gala to spring 2027.

This event is not cancelled.

We are currently working with the venue to secure the new date and will share the confirmed details as soon as they are finalized.

Our goal has always been to create an incredible evening that brings our community together in support of mental wellness in sport and the T.E.A.M. Fund. Moving the event gives us the opportunity to create the experience we want for our guests, sponsors and community.

If you already purchased tickets, your registration will remain secured for the new spring date.
