Some days at rescue are harder than others. And some days, apparently, our rescue vehicle decides it would like to contribute to the chaos. 😅

We put tens of thousands of kilometres on this van every year hauling animals, supplies, food, litter and everything else rescue life requires. So when we took it in for what we thought was simply a wheel alignment, we weren’t thrilled to learn that a wheel bearing had actually failed.

And knowing what that could cost us to repair, one of our founders decided to put his mechanic’s hat back on. He’s not a professional mechanic, but he’s pretty damn handy. Thankfully, the weather cooperated. The wheel hub, however, did not.

It had likely been sitting in that steering knuckle for 15 years and was thoroughly seized in place. But with a little patience, a LOT of penetrating oil and a healthy dose of brute force, it finally surrendered. 💪

New hub in place, back for the alignment, and unfortunately, a couple of new front tires too. That failed bearing chewed them up in a hurry.

And because apparently one vehicle-related headache at a time would be too easy, we also had a massive nail/bolt go straight through a tire just over a week ago.

A huge thank-you to Tires On The Run for helping us out and replacing that tire at no charge. ❤️

Rescue isn’t always cute kittens and happy adoption photos. Sometimes it’s seized wheel hubs, tire bills, penetrating oil and getting your hands dirty to keep the wheels turning.

And we’re grateful for the people who help us keep doing exactly that. 🐾

A few days ago, we introduced you to three little faces and asked for name suggestions. You definitely had opinions. 😸

The post with the most reactions brought in a few different ideas, but one set of names was just too cute to pass up.

So, from left to right, meet Turtle, Tumbleweed and Tinkerbelle! 🐢✨

Stay tuned for another post featuring some new faces. We’ll be bringing along some of the name suggestions from that first post, plus any new ideas you come up with!

Who knows? You might just help name the next little rescue crew. ❤️

Additionally, thank you to Andrea and Samantha for sharing some love for our littles with donations of food and treats, and possibly the best gift, for the humans at least…laundry detergent!

One month. So many lives on the line. 🐾

September at BHARS was almost our busiest month yet, and definitely one of our most expensive.

And behind every dollar, every kilometre and every late night were animals who needed us.

Roxie came to us with a massive wound. Surgery, IV fluids, oxygen and round-the-clock care later, she’s healing beautifully.

Max arrived with pneumonia. X-rays, bloodwork and treatment have him breathing easier, and thankfully his FIV/FeLV tests came back negative.

Pacino came in with a urinary infection, but his testing uncovered much harder news. He is FIV positive and has stage 2 kidney disease. His prognosis is guarded, but FIV-positive cats can live long, happy lives. For now, he is warm, safe and cared for, and we’ll give him the best life we can.

And that’s only three of the animals we helped this month.

✂️ 20 animals had surgery through Canadian Animal Task Force, and we’re now working to find every one of them a home.

✂️ Just over 70 cats were fixed at Fixin’ Friday.

🩺 Mama Penelope made two trips to Trinity Hills Veterinary Clinic.

🦷 2 dental procedures completed.

💉 Countless health checks, vaccine boosters and dewormings.

🏠 20 outdoor cat shelters being built to make outdoor life a bit easier for feral cats.

🚗 Thousands of kilometres driven by our team, including discovering a massive bolt through a tire on our primary rescue vehicle.

It was a big month. A very expensive month. And a month filled with animals who needed someone to say, “Yes, we’ll help.”

That’s what your support makes possible.

✨ Winnie, Willow & Wally are ready for their next chapter! ✨

These three beautiful siblings are little miracles. They were born to a very feral mama who was still just a kitten herself, and motherhood definitely did not come naturally to her. She gave birth in a litter box, and we had to separate the babies a little younger than we would have liked for their safety.

Mama is now living her best outdoor life, with good food, cozy shelters and amazing caretakers looking out for her. ❤️

And these three? They’re growing, thriving and now looking for their forever home.

They had their surgeries today, and right now their biggest priority is busting out of this kennel! 😂

These little survivors are ready for a home where they can keep being the happy, goofy kittens they were meant to be.

🏡 Three little miracles, waiting for their forever.

🐱 KITTENS. EAT. A LOT.

Growing kittens go through an astonishing amount of wet food. And while we’re incredibly grateful for every food donation we receive, kitten wet food isn’t something we see a lot of in our donation bins.

So sometimes, we have to bite the bullet and buy it ourselves.

What you see here? $275 worth of kitten food. And with the number of growing mouths currently in our care, we expect this entire stash to be gone in about two weeks. 😳

It’s not the most exciting thing to fundraise for, but full bellies are pretty important when you’re growing into the fabulous cats you’re meant to be. ❤️

🐾 NERMAL — Pet Valu Mid Town
Nermal is the perfect mix of playful adventurer and cuddle buddy! He loves being involved in whatever his humans are doing, playing with crinkly toys, and exploring. Once playtime is over, he’s always ready for a cozy nap and some cuddles. A sweet, curious boy who’s ready to be your helper, playmate, and cuddle buddy! 💕

👑 POSEY — Pet Valu Mid Town
Tiny but mighty, Posey is a little princess with a BIG personality! She may be small, but she has no trouble keeping her brothers in line. Behind her adorable sass is a sweet girl who loves attention, cuddles, playing, and exploring. She knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to let you know! 👑💕

💕 JEFFY — Pet Valu Diamond Valley
Jeffy is a playful, chatty boy who loves zooming around, playing with toys, watching birds, and then hopping into your lap for cuddles. He especially loves forehead kisses! He’s smart, curious, and does well with other cats with proper introductions. Loud noises can scare him, but treats are the perfect way to win him back over. A wonderful mix of playful and loving! 🐾

🧀 CHEESE — Pet Valu Diamond Valley
Cheese may be the smallest of the litter, but she has the BIGGEST personality! She loves exploring, playing, and keeping up with her siblings. She started out a little spicy but is learning that humans can be pretty great! She’ll need a patient family to help her build confidence and blossom at her own pace. 💕

🌶️ PEPPER — Pet Valu Diamond Valley
Pepper may have started out a little spicy, but this sweet boy is slowly letting his softer side shine! He’s curious, playful, and loves exploring and getting into kitten mischief with his siblings. He’s still learning that humans aren’t so scary and needs a patient family to help him build confidence. We can’t wait for the right person to discover the sweet little guy underneath! ❤️

🐾 Why we don’t adopt out single kittens

We know it can be tempting to look at one tiny kitten and think, “That’s the one. I want just one.” ❤️

But kittens aren’t tiny independent cats. They’re learning how to be cats.

This is why our policy is firm: BHARS will not adopt out a single kitten under 6 months of age unless there is already a feline-friendly, welcoming playmate living in the home.

It’s not about being difficult. It’s about giving kittens what they need to grow into happy, confident, well-socialized cats.

Kittens learn from other cats. They learn:
🐱 How hard is too hard when playing
🐱 How to read another cat’s body language
🐱 Bite and claw inhibition
🐱 Appropriate boundaries
🐱 How to burn off their absolutely ridiculous kitten energy 😂
🐱 How to settle down after play
🐱 Appropriate feline social skills

A human can provide love, cuddles, enrichment and playtime, but we can’t completely replace another kitten or cat. And when a kitten doesn’t have an appropriate feline outlet, that energy and frustration can sometimes show up as rough play, ankle attacks, inappropriate biting, nighttime chaos and other behaviours that become much harder to manage as they grow.

Two kittens don’t necessarily mean twice the work. In many cases, they actually help keep each other occupied, teach each other boundaries and make the transition into adulthood smoother.

So if you’re dreaming of a tiny kitten, please dream in pairs. 🐾🐾

If you already have a friendly, playful cat at home, we’re happy to consider a single-kitten adoption where the match makes sense.

Our policy exists because we care about what happens after adoption, not just getting a kitten into a home.

Because sometimes the best thing you can give a kitten… is another kitten. ❤️
