And people worth getting to know.

This World Food Day, we’re celebrating the farmers, food producers, chefs and small business owners who bring so much to the table here in Wellington County.

From growing and harvesting to baking, cooking and sharing, their work connects our fields to our communities. Choosing local helps support their livelihoods, keeps dollars in our local economy and brings us closer to the people who make our food.

It’s Ontario Agriculture Week! Today, we’re shining a spotlight on agritourism, your invitation to experience the heart of Wellington County up close.

Did you know nearly 7,700 Ontario farms sold directly to consumers in 2020, according to the 2021 Census of Agriculture? Shopping at a farm store or picking your own produce is a delicious way to support the people growing our food! From wandering through corn mazes and picking your own apples, to meeting local farmers and tasting farm-fresh meals, there are endless ways to connect with our vibrant agricultural community, season after season:

🌾 Happy Ontario Agriculture Week!

Agriculture is a big part of life in Wellington County. This week, we’re celebrating the farmers, producers and food businesses that grow, make and sell food right here in our community. Fresh produce, meat, dairy, maple syrup, honey, preserves, baked goods, craft beverages and more — there’s no shortage of ways to put local on the table!

Next time you’re at the farmers’ market, stopping at a farm gate or picking up something from a nearby producer, take a moment to get to know where your food comes from and the people behind it.

Heading out to the Fall Rural Romp tomorrow? Here are a few handy tips to help you make the most of your day!

🗺️ Pick up or download a romp map so you know where to go!
❄️ Bring a cooler: keep the food you purchase along the romp fresh and safe.
💵 Bring cash: locations may not accept debit or credit.
🚫 Leave your pets at home: many farms do not allow pets on their property.
🧥 Wear proper clothing: farms can get dirty so dress appropriately!
🌂 Bring an umbrella! The event occurs rain or shine.

🌳 Pick up a free tree at Green Legacy!

Visit the County of Wellington's Green Legacy Tree Nursery during the Fall Rural Romp for a behind-the-scenes look at how trees are grown and cared for. Tour the greenhouses, explore the nursery, go on a nature hike and even try your hand at transplanting a tree.

Learn how Green Legacy works with students and volunteers to increase forest cover across Wellington County. Stop by for refreshments, including their Must Taste: Eastern Hemlock Tea with Maple Syrup! Link in bio🔗
