Honouring Indigenous History Month!
Indigenous History Month brings an important reminder of our responsibilities in the process of reconciliation with Land and People. As caretakers of Land in The Arboretum, we have unique responsibilities in caring for and maintaining this space for generations to come.
As visitors, we ask that you take a moment to reflect on what Land means to you, participate in self-guided learning, and meaningfully engage with reconciliation well beyond the month of June. Join us throughout this month as we share stories, photos, and initiatives at The Arboretum.
Did you know?
The U of G Arboretum is incorporating Indigenous art, Anishinaabemowin (the language of the Anishinaabeg) and Kanien’keha (the language of the Mohawk) into a redesign of the signs on the Native Trees of Ontario Loop so that traditional stories and knowledge about native trees can be shared year-round.
The Arboretum is also home to the Indigenous Tea Garden, which is a space that is nurtured by Indigenous members of our campus community and Settler Allies. This space is an example of weaving traditional gardening practices, plants and knowledge from across Turtle Island.
