So if you’ve made it through Chapter 1 and Chapter 2, we appreciate you following along 🫶🏼.

Over the last two days, we’ve talked about fairy tales.
𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙈𝙖𝙜𝙞𝙘 𝙁𝙖𝙧𝙢.
𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙘𝙪𝙚 𝙁𝙖𝙞𝙧𝙮 𝙂𝙤𝙙𝙢𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧.
𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙉𝙤-𝙆𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙒𝙞𝙯𝙖𝙧𝙙.
𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙄𝙣𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙚 𝙁𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙆𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙙𝙤𝙢.
𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙇𝙚𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙧𝙮 𝙎𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙤𝙣𝙚.

𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲.

And now we’ve reached the final chapter.

📖 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝟑: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐨

Every fairy tale has a hero.
🛡️ The brave knight.
🦸‍♀️The chosen one.
🦸🏽‍♂️The person who arrives just in time to save the day.

But this story has a twist.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝗽.
Because they were never coming.

And that’s where a lot of people get stuck.
They think accepting reality means giving up.
It doesn’t.

🎯𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁.
𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻’𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲.

❗️You can’t help animals while pretending resources are unlimited.
❗️You can’t build a better community on make-believe.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙩𝙝 𝙞𝙨, 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙡 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙗𝙚 𝙨𝙖𝙫𝙚𝙙.
Not every story gets the ending we hoped for.
Not every decision feels good.

But pretending those realities don’t exist has 𝙣𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙥𝙚𝙙 𝙖 𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙡𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙡.

⭐️ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻’𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹.

💙They’re the neighbor who gets a cat fixed.
💙The foster who says yes.
💙The volunteer who gives up a Saturday.
💙The donor who gives $10.
💙The shelter employee who keeps showing up.
💙The rescuer running on four hours of sleep.
💙The person who stops scrolling and decides to do something.

Because the dragon doesn’t disappear when we close our eyes.

The animals don’t stop being born.
The shelters don’t magically empty themselves.
The problem doesn’t solve itself.

But it gets a whole lot easier to fight when an entire village decides to face it together.
✅And that’s how communities change.

❌Not through magic.
❌Not through fairy tales.
❌Not through waiting for someone else.

By ordinary people willing to face reality and do something anyway.

Today, on Veterinary Appreciation Day, we want to extend our deepest gratitude to every veterinarian, veterinary technician, veterinary assistant, receptionist, kennel attendant, and support staff member working in Northern Ontario.

The veterinary teams in our region face challenges that many people don't see. With a severe shortage of veterinarians and an overwhelming number of patients needing care, they work tirelessly every single day to help as many animals as possible. We see the long hours, the difficult decisions, the emotional toll, and the exhaustion they carry. Despite it all, they continue to show up because they care deeply about the animals and families who depend on them.

To our community, we ask one thing:
**please be kind.**

We understand how frustrating it is when appointments are booked months in advance or when a clinic simply cannot take on another patient. We know how heartbreaking it is when you're worried about your beloved pet. But please remember that your veterinary team feels that heartbreak too. No one enters this profession wanting to say, "I'm sorry, we can't." They are doing everything humanly possible with the resources they have, and many are facing burnout while continuing to give their all.

Today, we especially want to recognize the incredible teams who have supported Nickel City Cats through veterinary care, guidance, and generous donations over the years. Your compassion has helped countless cats receive the care they deserve.

If you live in Sturgeon Falls or the West Nipissing area and want to foster, we need you! The North Bay Human Society can only do so much and we can help them out. We prioritize pregnant/nursing mamas and kittens under the age of 6 months, and also tackle a lot of indoor colonies. As a foster based rescue, we do a LOT! And we can’t do it without our fosters. If you have found and rescued kittens, you may be wondering how to catch the mom cat. 🤔 It is so important to make that effort!

Please don't just scoop up the kittens and move on. 🚫 Leaving the mother cat behind often means she will face the exact same situation again in just a few short months, producing another litter and continuing the cycle.

If kittens are around, there's a very good chance mom is nearby, even if you haven't seen her. It is actually uncommon for an entire litter of kittens to be abandoned.

So how do you find her❓

Place the kittens in a carrier or trap at the location where they were found. Then set a baited trap in front of the carrier and cover both with a sheet or blanket to create a little "tunnel" leading straight to her babies.

And here's the important part—go away. 😂

Mama cat is much less likely to return if a scary human is standing nearby watching. Let the kittens and the trap do the work for you. If possible, go inside and monitor from a window. If you're in a public location, park nearby where you can still keep an eye on the trap from your vehicle.

PLEASE NOTE: Going away does not mean leaving the trap unattended. Never leave a trap unattended. It simply means not standing right next to it expecting mom to walk in while you're watching. Monitor from a window, your vehicle, or another location where you can observe the trap without being seen.

⚡️🌩 Meet Storm & Thunder 🌩⚡️

Some bonds are simply meant to be. ❤️

Storm and Thunder are a stunning bonded pair who share more than just a home—they're also siblings from different litters, with the same parents! Somehow, despite being born at different times, they look almost identical.

These sweet girls are always curled up together, and they're just as happy to cuddle with their people as they are with each other. Wherever one goes, the other is never far behind. Watching them together is enough to melt anyone's heart. 🩷

Because of a previous introduction that didn't go well with a dog, they haven't been tested with other cats and would likely be happiest as the only pets in the home. One thing is certain, though—they absolutely need to stay together.

👋🏼 Welcome back. Yesterday we talked about The Magic Farm.

The place where every unwanted animal somehow ends up living happily ever after.

The 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙘𝙪𝙚 𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙡.
The 𝙛𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙧𝙤𝙤𝙢.
The 𝙢𝙖𝙜𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙗𝙤𝙙𝙮 𝙚𝙡𝙨𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙡𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙢.

But 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀.
And over the years, we’ve heard of quite a few.

First, there’s the 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗰𝘂𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘆 𝗚𝗼𝗱𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿. 🧚
🪄She appears with unlimited foster homes.
🪄Unlimited money.
🪄Unlimited volunteers.
🪄Unlimited space.
𝗡𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘂𝗽, 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲.

Then there’s the 𝗡𝗼-𝗞𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗪𝗶𝘇𝗮𝗿𝗱.🧙
🪄With a wave of his wand, every aggressive dog becomes adoptable.
🪄Every sick animal gets treatment.
🪄Every feral cat finds placement.
𝗡𝗼𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻.

Of course, we can’t forget the 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗱𝗼𝗺. 🏰
🪄A magical land where every family has extra space.
🪄Extra time.
🪄Extra patience.
🪄Extra experience.
𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘃𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀.

But everyone’s favorite character is…𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲.
🪄Someone should help.
🪄Someone should trap.
🪄Someone should foster.
🪄Someone should donate.
🪄Someone should take the animal.
🪄Someone should fix the problem.

The funny thing about “𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙤𝙣𝙚” is that everyone is usually talking about 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙗𝙤𝙙𝙮 𝙚𝙡𝙨𝙚.

The interesting thing about fairy tale characters is that they all have one thing in common.
𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆’𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹.

❗️The rescue is usually a handful of exhausted volunteers.
❗️The foster network is full.
❗️The donations are running low.
❗️The shelter is overflowing.
❗️The veterinarians are booked.
❗️And the people already helping are trying to figure out how to keep going tomorrow.

But pretending these magical characters exist doesn’t make the problem disappear. 𝗜𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝘁.

And while we’re waiting for the “Rescue Fairy Godmother” to arrive…

🐱The animals keep being born.
📞 The calls keep coming.
🆘 The shelters keep filling.

The dragon doesn’t disappear because we close our eyes. It just keeps eating the village.
