Tracking Skills Training

A few weeks ago, our members worked on their tracking skills, focusing on locating five items within a designated grid square and understanding the importance of spacing between footprints and measuring track distances.

Members also discussed how drone-mounted thermal imaging can sometimes help identify recently deposited tracks, adding another tool to our search and rescue capabilities.

Regular training helps our members build the skills, knowledge, and techniques needed to support search operations when called upon.

Thank you to our partners at STARS Air Ambulance for having us out and giving us the opportunity to share some of our skills with the participants.

Successful Large-Scale Mock Search Exercise Held at Nitehawk

Grande Prairie Technical Search & Rescue successfully completed a large-scale mock search exercise at Nitehawk Year-Round Adventure Park over the September 18–20 weekend, with the primary exercise taking place Saturday, September 19.

The exercise brought together search and rescue teams from across Alberta for a realistic, multi-team training scenario designed to test coordination, communications, search techniques and the deployment of specialized resources.

Throughout the exercise, teams operated across the Nitehawk property, utilizing a variety of resources including ATVs, Equine teams and other search equipment. The scenario provided an opportunity for members and participating teams to work together in a challenging environment while building skills that can be applied during real-world search and rescue operations.

Large-scale exercises such as this are an important part of maintaining operational readiness. They allow teams to identify strengths, work through challenges and strengthen relationships with other search and rescue organizations before those skills are needed during an actual emergency.

Grande Prairie Technical Search & Rescue would like to thank Nitehawk Year-Round Adventure Park for providing the location and supporting the exercise, and the Search and Rescue Association of Alberta for its support.

We also extend our appreciation to all of the search and rescue teams and volunteers who travelled to Grande Prairie and took part in the weekend.

Training together helps ensure that when the call comes, we are ready to respond.
