Fenders not only protect vessels from jagged concrete and steel wharfs but also spread and dampen the impact vessels have on our infrastructure.

The most common types of fenders at the Port of Goderich are:

1- Prism fenders: effective workhorses for single point protection
2- Timber fenders: allow vessels to smoothly slide along berths while loading
3- Cell fenders: for large ships and high impact areas
4- Tires: inexpensive and soft
5- Sausages: inexpensive and robust

Keep clear of ship’s mooring lines. They can often take loads of over 100 tons before they snap and all that energy has to go somewhere!

The Ocean A. Simard dropped by our office for some water and a nice chat. These voith-Schneider drive tugs are a hoot to operate.

Our ladders sometimes get a few scrapes from ice or ships. The GPMC is always busy repairing the port's infrastructure and safety gear. Even though there are ladders, swimming in the commercial port is prohibited!

Great to get a tour of the Heerengracht with the Chamber of Marine Commerce, Mayor Trevor Bazinet, and Aden from P&H. We had lively discussion about Goderich's role shipping grain and other commodities around the world and the important relationships that keep our industry on the move. Wishing Captain Valeriy and his crew a safe passage to Norway with a load of locally grown beans.

Busy with small craft this week. Dive boat ASI Clipper spent the night before continuing her journey South. The CGS Kelso is also in and out this week doing fisheries science.
