That’s a wrap on Fish Camp 2026!

What a summer it was! 121 future anglers joined us for 7 camps at 4 locations across SNC’s watershed, where they learned, explored, casted lines, and made plenty of memories!

Campers learned about respectful fishing, invasive species in our watershed, different types of baits and lures, and fish species found across our watershed and Ontario.

And of course, there were plenty of exciting catches! Northern Pike, Walleye, Smallmouth Bass, Rock Bass, Yellow Perch, Brown Bullhead, Pumpkinseed, White Sucker, and Bluegill were some of the species reeled in! 🐟

A special thank you to the Ottawa Flyfishers volunteers for introducing our young anglers to fly fishing, helping them create their own fly lures, and teaching them how to use a fly rod!

Thank you to all of our campers, families, and volunteers for making Fish Camp 2026 such a memorable summer.

Have an idea that could make a difference in your community? 🌱

Since 2015, SNC has awarded over $50,000 through its Community Environmental Grant Program to support local groups and non-profit organizations in bringing their ideas to life. From community clean-ups and environmental fairs to fishing derbies, river races, and fundraisers, these grants help support projects that bring people together and benefit our environment.

Applications are accepted year-round, making it easy to get started on your next community project.

SNC staff were recently out in Clarence Creek removing invasive European Water Chestnut (EWC), an aquatic invasive plant that can form dense mats on the water’s surface. These mats crowd out native species, reduce dissolved oxygen levels, and make recreational activities like boating difficult.

SNC first became aware of EWC in the South Nation and Castor Rivers in 2022. Since then, staff have been working hard each year to remove the invasive species and help prevent it from spreading. EWC seeds can remain dormant in sediment for years, making long-term removal efforts essential to protecting our waterways and native aquatic life.

Our work continues throughout the summer to keep these invasive plants in check!

NOTICE: Trail Maintenance at Findlay Creek Conservation Area

As of Tuesday, August 25th, SNC staff will be starting maintenance along the boardwalk in preparation for future tree planting.

The conservation area remains open during this work, but if you're planning a visit, please use caution, watch for staff and equipment, and follow any posted signage.

Respect on the Water🌊

Whether you're boating, fishing, paddling, or relaxing by the river, help keep our waterways safe and enjoyable for everyone!

🚤 Watch your speed and wake
Slow down in narrow channels, near shorelines, waterfront properties, and local communities. Large boat wakes can contribute to shoreline erosion and cause damage to docks and boats.

🚧 Stay clear of water control structures
For your safety, please avoid boating near dams and other water control structures, and always respect posted signage.

🦺 Wear your life jacket
Stay alert, wear a properly fitted personal flotation device, and follow all boating safety rules. Remember, a boating license is required to operate a motorized boat in Canada.

🏊 Swimming reminder
SNC does not promote swimming at any of our Conservation Areas at any point during the year. Please respect all posted signs and stay safe around the water.

A little respect goes a long way! Be responsible, be safe, and help protect our shorelines and waterways for everyone to enjoy.

Please keep your pet on a leash to help protect them, wildlife, and other visitors.

Off-leash pets may encounter:
• Poisonous plants
• Wildlife
• Ticks
• Other dogs

Please remember to pick up after your pet and help keep our Conservation Areas clean for everyone to enjoy.

Know the difference before you hit the trails! 🌿

Poison Parsnip and Poison Ivy may both cause painful skin reactions, but they affect your skin in different ways.

Poison Ivy
• Grows as a vine, shrub, or ground cover
• Identified by its clusters of three leaflets
• Contact with the plant can cause an itchy, blistering rash

Wild Parsnip
• A tall plant with umbrella-shaped clusters of small yellow flowers
• Commonly found along roadsides, trails, and open fields
• Its sap reacts with sunlight and can cause severe burns, blistering, and long-lasting skin discoloration

If you come across either plant, avoid touching it and keep children and pets away. Wearing long sleeves and pants while exploring, and washing exposed skin and clothing after spending time outdoors, can help reduce your risk.

A little awareness goes a long way in helping everyone enjoy the outdoors safely!

Summer isn’t over yet, and neither is bear season!🐻

Bears are active this time of year as they prepare for hibernation this fall. Whether you’re hitting the trails or enjoying your backyard, keep these simple tips in mind:

On the trails:
• Make noise and stay alert
• Keep dogs leashed and close
• Never approach or feed a bear
• If you see a bear, give it plenty of space and slowly back away

At home:
• Secure garbage and bring in bird feeders
• Clean your BBQ after use
• Keep pet food indoors

Enjoy the outdoors, respect wildlife, and give bears their space!
