🦋

Monarch butterflies complete an incredible migration from Mexico to Canada over the course of four generations. No single butterfly makes the entire journey — each new generation continues where the last one left off.

Conservation efforts are essential to helping this endangered species survive by protecting and restoring their habitat. Planting native milkweed, reducing pesticide use, and preserving natural spaces all help provide monarchs with the conditions they need to complete their migration and thrive in our region.

Small actions can help these tiny travelers complete an epic journey! 🦋

As you enjoy our Conservation Areas this season, please help keep these natural spaces safe, clean, and enjoyable for everyone by remembering the following:

🦮 Pick up after your dog and keep them leashed.

⚠️ Stay clear of dams and water control structures — fishing is prohibited within 75 feet of dams to protect public safety and fish populations.

🎣 An Outdoors Card and valid fishing license are required to fish in Ontario.

🛶 Follow boating safety rules — wear a personal flotation device, reduce speed in narrow channels and near shorelines, and remember a boating license is required to operate a motorized boat in Canada.

🚶‍♂️ Stay on marked trails to protect plants and wildlife.

🚗 Park only in designated parking areas.

🏕️ Camping is not permitted in Conservation Areas.

♻️ Please take all waste with you or use designated garbage and recycling bins.

Thank you for helping us protect these spaces 💚 Enjoy your outdoor adventure!

🐢

Snapping turtles get their name for a reason — they have a powerful bite and can lunge when they feel threatened, so it’s always best to give them plenty of space!

If you come across one, here are a few ways to help keep both you and the turtle safe:

• Admire from a distance
• Keep pets and children away if you encounter one on a trail or roadside
• If a turtle is crossing the road, only help if it is safe to do so
• Never pick up a snapping turtle by the tail
• Avoid standing too close to the front of the shell
• Always allow the turtle to continue in the direction it was already heading

Stay alert while enjoying nature — respecting space helps keep both people and wildlife safe🌿👀

Good food, great conversations, and a chance to connect! 🍔🌭

SNC recently welcomed local contractors to our Annual Septic Contractors Meeting & BBQ at the Administrative Office in Finch. Attendees connected with fellow contractors, discussed plans for the upcoming season, and enjoyed an afternoon of BBQ favourites and networking. 🛠️

SNC’s Septic Program plays an important role in supporting safe development across our watershed. Septic permits are required for the installation or modification of private sewage systems, including tanks and leaching beds, under the Ontario Building Code.

We’re looking forward to continuing to work alongside our local contractors and seeing what 2026 will bring!

As the weather warms up and we spend more time outdoors, it’s important to stay tick safe. ☀️🌿

Ticks can carry Lyme disease, a serious illness spread through the bite of an infected tick. When visiting trails and conservation areas, take a few simple steps to protect yourself and your family:

🚶‍♂️‍➡️Stay on designated trails and avoid tall grass and shrubs where ticks usually enjoy
👖Wear long sleeves, long pants, and light-coloured clothing
🧦Tuck pants into socks, and shirts into waistbands
🪳Use insect repellent containing DEET or Icaridin
👀Check yourself, children, and pets for ticks after being outdoors
🕒Remove ticks as soon as possible — ideally within 24 hours

Enjoy the outdoors safely, and don’t forget to complete a tick check after your adventure! 🥾🐾

Happy World Turtle Day! 🐢

Today we celebrate turtles and the important role they play in healthy ecosystems. From protecting nesting habitats to preserving wetlands, conservation efforts help these ancient reptiles thrive for generations to come.

But conservation doesn’t stop in protected areas—many turtles travel across roads, where they face serious risks. As temperatures begin to rise, turtles become more active near roadways, and females often nest along roadside shoulders. Unfortunately, road mortality is one of the leading causes of death for these curious creatures. Please use caution while driving and keep an eye out for them.

If you encounter a turtle on the road:

🚗 Prioritize safety at all times
🚫 Leave it alone if it’s not in danger
▶️ If it is in danger, move it across the road in the direction it’s heading (only if it’s safe to do so)
🙌 Use both hands and never pick it up by the tail
🧼 Wash or sanitize your hands after handling
