The sun is out, and with it comes a question we hear every year:

"Can I still tan while breastfeeding?"

The good news is yes. Spending time in the sun and tanning outdoors will not change your milk or affect your ability to breastfeed.

If you're enjoying a sunny day by the pool, at the beach, or in your backyard, your milk remains exactly what your baby needs.

One thing to keep in mind is that babies and young children are much more vulnerable to sunburn than adults. While you're soaking up some sunshine, make sure your little one is protected with shade, appropriate clothing, and limited direct sun exposure.

And if your baby wants to nurse while you're relaxing outside? That's perfectly normal too. Breastfeeding provides comfort, hydration, connection, and a familiar place to return to during a busy summer day.

Some days, all it takes is one person saying:

"Me too."

Me too, I worried if my baby was getting enough milk.
Me too, I cried from exhaustion.
Me too, I wondered if I was doing any of this right.
Me too, I needed someone to listen.

For 65 years, La Leche League Canada has been built on those two simple words.

Feeding a baby was never meant to be a journey taken alone.

Come see why families have trusted LLLC for 65 years. đź’™

Heading to the pool with your baby this summer?

If your little one gets hungry, thirsty, overwhelmed, excited, tired, or simply wants to reconnect, breastfeeding at the pool is completely normal.

Many parents are surprised to learn that there is no need to limit breastfeeding around pools. Human milk contains living substances that help protect babies from viruses and bacteria they may encounter in everyday life, including through pool water.

For babies, breastfeeding is about so much more than food. It provides comfort, reassurance, hydration, connection, and a familiar place to return to during a busy day of new sights, sounds, and splashing.

At La Leche League Canada, we believe families should feel welcomed and supported wherever they choose to feed their babies. That's why we've created a Breastfeeding and Pools Guide for aquatic staff and facility team members. The guide helps foster welcoming spaces where breastfeeding families can enjoy community pools and aquatic centres without worry.

Every family deserves to feel safe.

For many 2SLGBTQIA+ families, fertility, pregnancy, birth, infant feeding, and parenting can include moments of joy, but also moments of uncertainty, invisibility, or navigating systems that weren't designed with them in mind.

Most of us entered this work because we care deeply about families. This free webinar offers an opportunity to listen, learn, and better understand the lived experiences of 2SLGBTQIA+ families and the powerful role healthcare providers, peer supporters, and community workers play in building trust and safety.

Join Sam Leeson for an honest and practical conversation about inclusive language, trauma-aware care, and the small everyday actions that help families feel seen, respected, and supported.

La Leche League International has publicly voiced opposition to collaboration between the United Nations and Nestlé, raising concerns about conflicts of interest related to the marketing of breastmilk substitutes.

For decades, families, advocates, healthcare providers, and organizations around the world have worked to protect breastfeeding and infant feeding support from commercial influence through the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes.

At La Leche League Canada, we believe families deserve evidence-based information, compassionate support, and infant feeding education free from commercial pressure.

Your baby’s mouth was designed to grow, move, and develop. Feeding plays a role in that.

Breastfeeding supports oral development through the natural movements babies use while nursing, helping support healthy jaw, muscle, and palate development along the way.

And despite the fear-based headlines parents often see online, breastfeeding itself is not considered a cause of cavities.

Nighttime nursing is also biologically normal. During the night, saliva production decreases for everyone, children and adults included. Good oral hygiene, regular dental care, limiting sticky sugary foods, and supporting families with evidence-based information all matter when it comes to oral health.

What supports healthy teeth and mouths?
✨ Breastfeeding
✨ Early oral hygiene
✨ Limiting sugary and sticky foods
✨ Avoiding sugary drinks in bottles
✨ Regular dental care
✨ Responsive feeding and support without shame

Parents deserve nuanced, evidence-based information, not guilt.

Today is World Human Milk Donation Day.

Human milk donation helps nourish and support vulnerable babies and families when they need it most. Behind every ounce donated is time, care, exhaustion, love, and an incredible act of generosity.

Tomorrow, we’ll be sharing Heather’s story, a mother who donated 100 litres of breastmilk during her baby’s first year of life.

It’s a powerful reminder of the ways parents continue showing up for not only their own babies, but for others too.

Stay tuned for her story tomorrow. 🫶
