The Rotary Club of Elliot Lake held its 20th Annual Red Briffett Memorial Golf Tournament on Saturday September 14th. The sunny summer weather helped to make it another enjoyable day of golf for the 115 participants who attended the event this year. The day at Elliot Lake’s Stone Ridge Golf Course concluded with a nice meal and prizes being awarded. Cash prizes were awarded to the top three teams as well as a name draw for items donated by generous local businesses.

Rotary named the tournament after local business man and tireless promoter of Elliot Lake, Malcolm ‘Red’ Briffett. Red came to Elliot Lake from Canada’s east coast. He ran many businesses over the years including; Red’s Esso and Red’s Little Ho**er Bait Shop. He sponsored many youth sports teams including Red’s Esso Atoms, a minor hockey team. He served on Elliot Lake’s city council from 1994 to 1997. Red lived Rotary’s motto of ‘Service Above Self’ working to make sure Elliot Lake was a better community to live in. He passed away in 2004. Rotary members were pleased to have his wife, Mrs. Doris Briffett, in attendance for this year’s tournament.

The Rotary Club of Elliot Lake decided to celebrate the tournament’s 20th year by committing $5000 to the Jamie and Jo-Ann Armstrong Centennial Arena Repair Challenge. Many participants of this year’s winning teams unexpectedly decided to donate back their prize money to the same fund. This donation of $750 prompted Rotary members to kick in some extra funds so a cheque for an even $6000 could be donated.

A very big thank you to those golfers who donated their prize money. A special thank you goes out to our title sponsors; Cameco, Seidel’s Brand Source, and the Elliot Lake Animal Hospital. Dinner sponsor was Cambridge LLP and a special mention to our local Swiss Chalet for the dinner coupons they gave to the golfers. A big thank you also to the local businesses who donated items for the prize table or sponsored a golf hole. They are listed below.

The Rotary Club of Elliot Lake hopes to see you all again for next year’s tournament.

Don’t Miss the Free Info Webinar Hosted by the Economic Development
Department of the City of Elliot Lake and HNCEA:
Date: Wednesday, Sept 25th
Time: 7:00 PM
Topic: The Key to Attracting More Customers: What Smart Owners Are Doing
Differently To Get Increased Sales
Presenter: Golden Voices Reconnecting & Rebuilding Project

The webinar will give you valuable insights into how you can attract new
customers and grow your sales. Learn why many businesses lose out on
sales — and how you can turn things around with expert, free help.

Here's what participants in the Golden Voices Reconnecting and
Rebuilding Project are saying:

Luc Morrisette, owner of Alpine Flowers and an Elliot Lake Councillor:
"It's a no-brainer. It's a free program and if it could enhance
somebody's business for the next eight, nine, ten months, it's worth it.
I urge the business to go ahead and make that phone call."

Clair Eldon, owner of 108 Lifestyles and Sporting Goods: "Just go for
it. We all need to get into this [online] world that we don't feel like
we have time to do it. So this helps us with the time we don't have to
do it."

Mark Hutchinson, owner of Hutchinson Automotive & Glass: "It’s a
no-brainer…the opportunity to get basically a service covered completely
by a grant…sort of stuff that I’ve been wanting to do and haven’t had
the time or ability to do. Oh, I’d say absolutely, go for it. If you’re
thinking about it, just do it."

The Rotary Club of Elliot Lake has issued a challenge! Yesterday we donated $5000 to The Jamie and Jo-Ann Armstrong Centennial Arena Repair Fundraising Challenge. We, in turn, are challenging other service groups and organizations to match our donation to the The Jamie and Jo-Ann Armstrong Centennial Arena Repair Fundraising Challenge.

Furthermore, we are announcing that the proceeds from this year's Red Briffett Memorial Golf Tournament will also be donated to the arena repair fund.
