Climate Justice Durham (formerly Fridays for Future Whitby) is a multi-generational group of volunteers advocating for meaningful climate-based change in Durham Region, ON as well as in all levels of government. Climate Justice Durham is located on the traditional and ancestral lands of the Michi Saagig Anishinaabeg, specifically the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

Photos from the Grassy Narrows River Run 📸

Grassy Narrows community members were joined by thousands of Indigenous kin and allies, including CJD, marching to raise awareness and to call for reparations for decades of mercury poisoning in their water. Water that’s been poisoned by wastewater from Dryden Paper Mill.

The rally was punctuated by emotional speeches from the leaders of the Grassy Narrows community, Indigenous drummers and singers, and banners displaying images of the children and adults affected by mercury poisoning in their community.

Photos from this year’s Durham Region Labour Council Labour Day event! 🫶

What a great event that reminds us of the amazing work that has been happening for hundreds of years to secure the labour rights that we take for granted today. But also, how we can continue to fight for those rights for workers across Ontario.

Ford has cut environmental protection laws again and again, as well as working steadily to weaken the social safety nets of our province.

Last month Climate Justice Durham was honoured to be a part of 360 Eco Market Plastic Free Market for Plastic Free July! 🗑️🚫

We spoke to attendees about climate change, climate justice, extreme heat regulations, the harms of single-use plastic, and easy ways be more eco-friendly in everyday life. 🌳🫶

Thanks to everyone who came out, spoke to us, and signed up for our volunteer and email list. And a special thanks to 360 Eco Market for planning and hosting this fantastic community event and to our fellow local vendors Artesanías Calli Boutique consignment shopping & Boutique display rentals Fab(liha) The Bhulis Jackie's Natural Products Jade Brown for great conversation and allowing us to stay plastic-free and shop small!

Given the theme of our last post and as climate change creates longer summers of extreme heat across Ontario, we are sharing this petition to help pass Bill 128, the Hot Days, Cool Homes Act.

This will help protect vulnerable groups like seniors, low-income renters, and people with disabilities by capping apartment temp at 26 degrees and ensuring cooling is a vital service under the Residential Tenancies Act.
