After being seasonally laid off from his role with BC Wildfire, Evan faced uncertainty and frustration. He was eager to continue working but found himself limited by a lack of specialized chainsaw certification training, which was essential for longer contracts, overtime, and greater job security. Determined to move forward, Evan connected with the WorkBC Centre in Cranbrook, ready to invest in his future.
He was supported in enrolling in a chainsaw faller entry program and assisted with acquiring the required safety gear. Alongside hands-on skills training, Evan strengthened his employability through resume and cover letter support, interview preparation, and networking courses. He actively participated in meetings, workshops, and job search activities. He completed training, a challenging certification test, and built connections with instructors and peers that opened doors for future employment.
Within a month, Evan secured continued employment with BC Wildfire as a Wildfire Fighter, now with increased job security, access to overtime, and opportunities to extend his season. The training made him more valuable to his employer and better positioned for advancement. During a time when he felt unproductive, WorkBC helped Evan stay motivated, gain confidence, and move forward with purpose.
