Why Light It Up? More than 740,000 Canadians with disabilities who are of working age have skills and talents to offer but are not currently part of the workforce.

People with disabilities bring valuable ideas, experiences, and strengths to workplaces across Canada. However, many still face barriers to finding and keeping meaningful employment.

That’s where National Disability Employment Awareness Month – or NDEAM – comes in.

Light It Up! For NDEAM™ shines a light on the importance of creating workplaces where everyone has the opportunity to succeed. It gives organizations a chance to show their commitment to inclusion, raise awareness, and be part of a growing movement that supports disability-inclusive employment by lighting their businesses, offices, and landmarks in blue and purple.

The meaning of a word is shaped not only by its definition, but also by its connection to lived experiences.

As we near the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we’re sharing the definitions of common words as they relate to the experiences of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples in the Residential School system.

Today’s word is reconciliation: an ongoing process based on the principles of mutual respect, honesty and goodwill.
