The Federal Government’s Bill C-39 proposes alarming changes to Section 107 of the Canada Labour Code. If passed, it would grant the Minister of Labour unprecedented, broad powers to unilaterally end legal strikes, enforce interim contract extensions, and impose binding arbitration based on broad criteria like “economic impact” or “social disruption.”

Happy Labour Day! Please take a moment to be grateful to those who fought the good fight to bring about the Trade Unions Act, a law that confirmed the legality of unions in 1872. This was the first step in the journey toward the recognition of an official "labour day". In September of 1894 Labour Day was marked as a statutory public holiday in Canada on the first Monday of each September.
