One element central to the Shaolin tradition was the Northern Lion Dance, which was practiced at our founding association in Shanghai during the 1920s/1930s, along with the Golden Dragon Dance. Shifu Woo did say there was even a routine of the Golden Dragon Meeting the male and female Golden Lions. The Golden Dragon Dance remains central to our tradition, but sadly, the Golden Lion Dance has been lost to our lineage. Like the Golden Dragon Dance, this dance was originally an imperial court dance. Notably, the Shanghai Chin Woo Association incorporated the Northern Lion Dance into its curriculum. In the early 1930s, Wei Yuan Fen— a Mizong Quan master from the Shanghai Chin Woo Association—brought the first pair of Northern Golden Lions from Shanghai to Singapore, as pictured below.
