As the dust settles on another municipal election in Caledon, we want to extend our sincere thanks to every candidate who put their name forward.

Running for public office takes courage. It means opening yourself up to public scrutiny, making difficult decisions, sharing your vision, and putting yourself out there in the hope of making a difference in the community you call home.

To every candidate, whether you were elected or not: your willingness to serve is something to be proud of. Winning an election is an achievement, but so is having the conviction to step forward, contribute to the conversation, and offer your time, energy, and ideas to public service.

Democracy depends on people who are willing to participate, to lead, to listen, and to put their names on the ballot. That deserves recognition and respect.

To all the candidates, their families, campaign teams, and volunteers who gave so much of themselves throughout this election: thank you.

And to the residents of Caledon who showed up, asked questions, shared their concerns, and cast their votes: thank you for being part of our democracy.

Public service is an honour. Choosing to serve is an act of courage. And our community is better for every person willing to step forward.

UPDATE: Due to increased demand, we were short of a certain type of ballot for English public at the Southfields Community Centre and English separate at St John Baptist Elementary School. We have therefore extended voting hours across all locations.

We have provided additional ballots to the Southfields Community Centre and ballots are also being shipped to St John Baptist Elementary School.

This is to ensure that residents who still want to vote can do so.

To everyone in Caledon who has taken the time to stand up for something that matters — this is for you.

To those who have stood before Council and spoken from the heart, sharing your concerns, your knowledge, and your hopes for our community.

To the volunteers who give their time, their energy, and their compassion to help our neighbours.

To those who work tirelessly to protect our natural environment, champion community safety, and preserve the things that make Caledon special.

And to everyone who continues to stand up for democracy, transparency, and the belief that every voice deserves to be heard.

Democracy Caledon’s Candidate Endorsements, Caledon-Wide

As the Caledon election campaign enters the home stretch, Democracy Caledon finds that the mayoral, regional and ward races have become divisive and highly charged.

Christina Early has run a clean, principled mayoral campaign that puts residents’ interests first. We have observed some terrific, community-minded candidates in all wards who we know would work hard for residents. But at times, the competition has been brutal and the tactics of some candidates and their teams have been unfair, unprincipled and even ugly.

We are deeply concerned that the seeds are being planted for a new majority voting bloc on the Council that could be every bit as destructive as the 5 to 4 bloc that Caledon residents have suffered through over the past four years. Some candidates, including Anthony Caputo (Ward 5), Jagraj Sekhon (Ward 2), Cosimo Napoli (Ward 6), Doug Maskell (Ward 3) and both Mauro Testani and Harpreet Grewal (Regional, Wards 1,2,3) as well as Tony Rosa (acclaimed as Regional, Wards 4,5,6), have aligned themselves with Mario Russo.

During this campaign, Mr. Russo has made a string of false and misleading claims on a number of Caledon issues. Given this record, the candidates aligned with him must be defeated to prevent the formation of a new majority voting bloc on Council.

Democracy Caledon is now prepared to endorse more candidates, building on those we have previously announced. In their various community roles, these candidates have worked hard for residents, representing Caledon’s most important priorities and values. They can be expected to work in the public interest on Council.

For Mayor: Christina Early
Regional Councillor, Wards 1, 2 & 3: Dave Sheen
Ward 1 Councillor: Keri Parfitt
Ward 2 Councillor: Hunar Kahlon
Ward 3 Councillor: Stan Cameron

This Caledon election is the most important in a generation. Collectively, we voters must prevent a new majority voting bloc on Council from forming and embrace new leadership. Christina Early is superbly well placed to lead Caledon as our next Mayor, with resident-first candidates to join her as Councillors.

JUST VOTE! We encourage you to get out tomorrow and vote in our municipal election.

Democracy is a privilege that not everyone is afforded. Many people globally would love the opportunity to participate in the democratic process and have a voice in the government that impacts their daily lives.

So tomorrow when you cast your vote, remember how much the simple act of voting means: you are able to have your voice heard and have a say in the future.

These photos document the lands between The Gore Road and Humber Station Road, North of King Street; also referred to as Block A6 of the 12 prematurely rezoned areas.

Mario Russo has criticized the previous council for adding 11,000 acres for growth without first securing the roads and other infrastructure needed to support it.

But when it came to properties like A6 featured here, Russo voted to rezone land for development as part of the 12 zoning bylaws approved in June and July 2024 — before the necessary infrastructure was secured and financing was confirmed.

That raises an important question: if growth should not move ahead without infrastructure and financial planning, why vote to rezone this land before those conditions were secured?

A6 along with 12 other blocks of land are part of the decision affecting nearly 5,000 acres, much of it prime agricultural land.

These decisions have lasting consequences for Caledon’s farmland, water, infrastructure and financial future.

Voters deserve to understand not just what candidates say about growth, but how they voted when it mattered.

Allegations of Campaign Materials in the Wrong Places

Democracy Caledon used Canada Post to mail over 24,000 postcards to residences across Caledon. We have no control over the fate of the postcards after delivery. When we were advised, after the first day of advance voting, that postcards were found within some voting places, we immediately advised the Town Clerk that we had nothing to do with this. But at his request, we reminded people through our mailing list and social media that voting places must be neutral, non-partisan spaces free of any campaign material.

Today, we are both surprised and disappointed to hear that some of our postcards have been taped to candidates' signs. We are not aware of how many or where this has been done. We state categorically that Democracy Caledon has had absolutely nothing to do with this action, which, like putting the postcards in voting places, violates Ontario's Municipal Elections Act and in the case of signs, violates Caledon's election sign by-law.

We oppose these actions by persons unknown in the strongest possible terms and ask that anyone taking these actions cease doing so immediately so that our election is free and fair.

These actions constitute a distraction from what really matters most in this election - sharing factual information so that residents can make informed decisions on which candidates will best serve residents of Caledon.
