Democracy Caledon

Democracy Caledon We are a non-profit volunteer group of concerned residents with a long record of civic engagement.

Our mission is to champion an open, democratic, public-inclusive process for municipal decision making, because local government affects residents the most.

This month, Democracy Caledon reached a milestone: our legal challenge of the Town’s inexplicably rushed re-zoning of 5,000 greenfield acres for urban development was heard in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. The judge will issue a written decision on the case after considering the arguments and material presented … so stay tuned!

Thank you to the community who came out in numbers and advocated for Caledon and against this questionable council move. Thank you to our supporters and donors, we appreciate you! 🫶🥰

Your ongoing support is still needed, however, both for Caledon itself and for Democracy Caledon.

Mayor Groves, who advanced the re-zoning in 2024 using Strong Mayor Powers, might not be running for re-election this October but the four councillors who voted for the premature re-zoning are all seeking re-election. Keep standing up for Caledon by remembering which names do NOT merit your vote: Mario Russo, Cosimo Napoli, Tony Rosa, Doug Maskell.

Our case having its day in court notwithstanding, Democracy Caledon’s advocacy for Caledon is not done as we head into the municipal election, nor are our legal bills paid.

The legal case was complex and costly and not something we took on lightly, however the only viable option available to us as residents was to challenge Council’s questionable decision in court.

Many Caledon residents don’t realize that our water supply relies primarily on groundwater, sourced from underground aquifers via municipal well systems managed by the Region of Peel.

This water is extracted, treated at small-scale facilities—using ultraviolet disinfection, chlorine, and filtration—and delivered to residents.

Major well systems serve communities like Caledon East, Palgrave, Alton, and Inglewood.

Democracy Caledon takes the safety of our water supply seriously and will always advocate for the protection of our water and environment, because forethought and informed action are essential to ensuring our communities are healthy and sustainable.

📌 Some highlights to hold the Town to account on:

▪️LARGE-SCALE FILL OPERATIONS (multi-year massive operations that are highly lucrative commercial enterprises): Call for prohibition on large-scale fill permits.

▪️GROUND AND SURFACE WATERS STILL VULNERABLE: Call for a total prohibition on any fill coming into contact with streams, ponds, lakes, or other bodies of water.

▪️FOCUS ON FUTURE DEVELOPMENT LANDS, NOT Caledon’s Greenbelt Lands: Call for strict enforcement to protect Caledon’s villages, agricultural lands, settlement areas and wildlands.

📣 April 24th Rally at 5pm outside the International Centre 📣

Opposed to Highway 413? Worried about Caledon’s Future?
Come tell Annette Groves at her Mayor’s Gala!

Meet at Derry Rd and Airport Rd at 5:00 pm outside the International Centre - 6900 Airport Road, Mississauga

Mayor Annette Groves is hosting her second Mayor's Gala dinner; guests include Premier Doug Ford and provincial Cabinet ministers.

A vigorous welcome is planned by Hwy 413 opponents outside the International Centre to remind Mayor Groves and Premier Ford that they work for us and our communities.

Come out to oppose Groves' and Ford's undermining of our democracy!

Let's advocate for a fiscally responsible, well-planned, resident-focused future for Caledon that protects our precious lands and waters.

Let's not let urban developers overtake our town.

Let's oppose an unnecessary highway to nowhere that would destroy Caledon's prime farmland, harm species at risk, and not solve our transportation challenges.

This isn't what we have in mind for Caledon's future. Let's remind Mayor Groves that in her 2022 mayoralty campaign, she opposed the 413. Now she heartily endorses it!

Please join us this Friday to give Mayor Groves and Premier Ford an unexpected, noisy, respectful and energetic welcome.

There is free onsite parking at the International Centre 6900 Airport Rd, Mississauga

👫 See you there and bring a friend! 👭

At the April 21st P & D Committee meeting there’ll be an opportunity for Councillors to put the spectre of the proposed site alteration (i.e. commercial fill) by-law to rest.

Councillor Kiernan will bring forward a motion to retain Caledon’s existing fill by-law, which protects Caledon from what the proposed site alteration by-law would allow - large commercial fill dumps that will irrevocably destroy lands across Caledon.

Write to your Ward reps asking they support Councillor Kiernan’s motion and attend the meeting to signal your support for maintaining tight limits on fill dumping!

🚨 CALEDON RESIDENTS - THIS MATTERS: Site Alteration Bylaw Open House 🚨

The Town of Caledon is proposing a Site Alteration By-law to regulate the placing and removal of fill, topsoil, and changes to land grading.

If you have been following us for a while, you know this is another slippery slope toward Caledon becoming the dump for commercial fill from across the GTA. The results of this bylaw will impact the health, water, transportation and tax burden on residents across Caledon for generations.

This isn’t small.

This directly impacts our land, our water, and our future. Show up and have your say.

📌 Open House Details:
Monday, May 4, 2026 at 6:00 to 8:00 pm

📢 This is your opportunity to:
• Ask questions
• Raise concerns
• Demand clarity
• Be part of decisions that affect YOUR community

Because once policies like this are in place… they shape everything that follows.

Don’t assume others will speak up.
Don’t assume it won’t affect you.

👉 Show up. Pay attention. Have your say.
