Democracy Caledon was recently included in a Toronto Star article examining the growing concerns surrounding Strong Mayor Powers and their impact on local democracy.
Democracy Caledon took legal action after Mayor Annette Groves chose to use Strong Mayor Powers to fast track Caledon into becoming a city by rezoning approximately 5,000 acres to enable roughly 35,000 housing units across several development areas in Caledon.
When Democracy Caledon filed an application in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice seeking to quash 12 zoning by-laws approved by Caledon Council in June 2024 it was about more than development. It was about ensuring that Caledon’s future is shaped through lawful processes, transparency, public participation, and accountable governance.
We believe growth must be planned responsibly. We believe major decisions should follow proper procedure. We believe residents deserve a voice in decisions that will affect our community, environment, infrastructure, taxes, and quality of life for generations to come.
This legal action is not funded by developers, special interests, or political parties. It is being carried forward by individual residents just like you who care deeply about Caledon and who believe that the rules should apply equally to everyone.
But defending democratic principles comes at a cost and the donations that have come from people across Caledon have been essential to covering the cost of this legal action that is still before the courts.
If you believe that Caledon deserves transparent government, responsible planning, and decision-making that respects both the law and the public interest, please consider making a donation to support our ongoing court action.
Every contribution goes directly to funding our legal efforts and helps ensure that residents continue to have a voice in shaping a democratic future for our community.
