***** BROCKVILLE RECORDER AND TIMES ARTICLE **************The Brockville Magedomas old-timers hockey club, who have taken the Weekender Program for Students “under their wing,” formally presented $16,300 to the program Wednesday. The money was raised during the Magedomas Old Timers Hockey Fest, March 24 and 25.

It was a significant increase from the Magedomas’ impressive $10,000 donation to the Weekender Program last year.

“We owe it all to the great Magedomas Old Timers hockey team players,” said Laura Roobol, founder and co-ordinator of the Weekender Program for Students, formerly the St. Vincent de Paul Weekender Program. “They have, as they say, ‘stuck with us’ and we thank them from the bottom of our hearts.”The Magedomas have a long history going back to 1904, Verhoeven explained. The team historically was very competitive but in recent years it’s been more about camaraderie.

“We’re just a bunch of old guys who love hockey and staying active. We did not set out to raise money for charity, but it has evolved and we’re all just as pleased as we can be with what we have been able to do for the Weekender for Kids Program,” said Verhoeven.

“The funds we’ve raised is the result of the hard work of the whole team,” said longtime Magedomas member Pete Deacon. “There are 30 of us who play Monday, Wednesday and Friday during the winter, and everybody did their part to make the Fest a success.”

“We raised a total of $17,300. Five hundred, which we donated to the Brockville and Area Food bank and $500 to the Prescott Food Bank,” said Deacon.

The team had much praise for the generosity of its sponsors.

“Last year we had about 40 sponsors and this year we had over 70 sponsors,” said Deacon, “We are so fortunate to live in such a generous community.”
