We all know a Jane Doe. No more silence.

Home. Should be safe. Sacred. Warm. Comfortable.

But often that is not the case. This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we will be discussing these issues including the current trend of male influencers using their platforms to speak up against all forms of violence against women.

“Hi I am Dr. Laurie Samuel, I’m a safety expert and I’m really embarrassed to admit that…”

-I have been a victim of stalking.

-Admitting that is difficult.

-Because when people hear ‘safety expert,’ they assume you know how to protect yourself.

-They assume you know the warning signs.

-They assume you would see it coming.

-I always thought bad things wouldn’t happen to me.

But here’s what I’ve learned:

-Sometimes you can do everything ‘right’ and someone else can still make the decision to violate your boundaries.

And that is not your fault.

-It doesn’t mean you weren’t careful enough.

-It doesn’t mean you should have seen it coming.

-And it certainly doesn’t mean you caused what happened to you.

-I struggled with the contradiction.

-How could I teach other people about safety when something like this happened to me?

-But now I realize that maybe this experience doesn’t make me less qualified to talk about safety.

-It makes me understand something that safety training sometimes forgets:

People aren’t problems to be solved.
Victims aren’t failures of prevention.
And responsibility belongs to the person who chooses to violate another person’s boundaries.

I’m sharing this because I know someone watching may have experienced something similar. If you have, don’t blame yourself. You are not responsible for someone else’s decision to hurt or violate you.
