The Brampton Warriors community is mourning the loss of Coach Hugh Riley, a man whose impact reached far beyond the game itself. After a courageous battle, Coach Hugh has left us, but the mark he made will never fade.
For years, Coach Hugh dedicated himself to the sport he loved and to the players who looked up to him. His coaching career was defined not just by wins and losses, but by the countless young athletes he mentored, guided, and believed in. He saw potential where others might not, and he gave his time freely, from early mornings to late nights, and everything in betweenβnever asking for recognition, only hoping to make a difference.
To his players, he was more than a coach. He was a teacher, a motivator, and often a steady presence during some of their most formative years. He taught discipline, resilience, teamwork, and respect, lessons that extended far beyond the basketball court and into everyday life. Many who wore the Warriors jersey will carry his words and wisdom with them forever, recalling not just the drills or the games, but the way he made them feel seen, supported, and capable.
Hugh was equally respected among his fellow coaches. Generous with his knowledge and always willing to lend a hand, he embodied what it meant to be part of a community. Whether offering advice, stepping in to help, or simply sharing a moment of camaraderie, he uplifted those around him and helped strengthen the entire program.
His passing leaves a deep and undeniable loss. There is an emptiness without our Hughy, on the bench, and in the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Yet even in grief, there is endless gratitude for the years he gave, the lives he shaped, and the legacy he built.
Coach Hugh Riley will always be remembered. His spirit lives on in every player who steps onto the court with determination, in every coach who chooses patience and kindness, and in every moment where the love of basketball brings people together.
The memories of a great coach π and an even greater person π will endure forever.
We miss you already Coach.
