Thank you to everyone who came out for our Fall Colours Nature Quest at Bill Dickinson Nature Reserve south of Gravenhurst yesterday. It was wonderful to have Bill's wife Jan and daughter Kim join us.

The colours may have peaked but we could not have asked for better weather. Amanda and Reegan taught the group about how and why the colours change and about the animals preparing for winter. We heard Trumpeter swans (though we did not see them, alas), and saw moose s**t, and bear (or maybe racoon) s**t. We plan name the lookout "Bill's Lookout", in memory of Bill Dickinson, a longtime Muskoka Conservancy supporter and volunteer.

This is the first time we've hosted a Nature Quest here since the 597-acre Nature Reserve was acquired by Muskoka Conservancy in 2023. We tried out the new trails, which we hope to open to the public next year.

Muskoka Conservancy hosts Nature Quest guided hikes with a variety of themes on our Nature Reserves about once a month all year long. Sign up for our email list or follow us on social to sign up when we announce them.

September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day—Every Child Matters.

We have a great deal of history to confront as we work to rebuild trust. Here are a few things you can do today—and throughout the year:

🌿 Wear an orange shirt in solidarity with those harmed by residential schools, including survivors and those affected across generations, and to honour the children who never came home.
🌿 Continue learning about the history of residential schools and the ongoing pursuit of justice for Indigenous peoples, starting with the UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the 94 Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
🌿 Attend a National Day of Truth and Reconciliation flag-raising ceremony in your community. Several are taking place throughout Muskoka.
🌿 Attend the screening of We Were Children at the Muskoka Discovery Centre tonight at 7 p.m. Directed by Tim Wolochatiuk, this feature film is recommended for audiences aged 16 and older. Contact the Discovery Centre for details and to RSVP.
🌿 Borrow a book from your local library. There is something for everyone, including 21 Things You May Not Know About the Indian Act, Indian Horse, and Split Tooth.

Truth and reconciliation is an ongoing journey. It is our responsibility to deepen our understanding of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis histories, cultures, experiences, and perspectives; to listen and learn; and to move forward together.

Many thanks to everyone who attended Opening Pathways, an afternoon dedicated to building relationships, sharing knowledge, and exploring opportunities for collaboration in conservation on Friday at MapleCross-Fraserburg Nature Reserve.

This gathering sets into motion a conversation around land stewardship between Muskoka Conservancy, First Nations, and a collaborative network of partners, funders, and stakeholders in Muskoka and the broader region.

We also want to thank the many hands who made this a success. Organizing team Greg, Joanne, Clarke, Jade, Reegan and Tamsen. Chef Ken Steele for a beautiful meal, Brian Sarazin and Keon for their songs, and speakers Kathleen Pa**lo, Val Vanderwyk, Lillian Trapper and Ian Attridge.

We are so excited to continue this journey together. Chi-Megwiich.

Situated just north of a rapidly expanding GTA and Greater Golden Horseshoe, Muskoka Conservancy stands to protect land for nature to thrive permanently "by legal instrument rather than good intentions."

"These are our most biodiverse ecosystems, and people see the pressure building and are demanding that we do more," explains Executive Director Scott Young. "Muskoka deserves to be protected forever, and that’s what we do."

Thank you to Thor Svaboe for this thoughtful feature in the Canadian luxury lifestyle pub SHARP Magazine exploring why the Conservancy exists and how you can help.
