Just another reminder about the opportunity to tour two gardens in the Valley on Saturday, July 6. Note also that Eileen Boyd's garden tour is a fundraiser and she is requesting a free will offering from visitors.

Here are the details again:
If you are carpooling, meet at 9 a.m.at True North Diner, beside Bedford Place Mall on Saturday, July 6.
Drive to Gary Drew's garden (44 Pleasant Street, Melvern Square), arriving around 10:30 a.m.
Have lunch at Angie's in Middleton.
If time permits, make a quick stop at Summerland Nursery in Wilmot (formerly Gladdens).
Tour of Eileen Boyd's garden (open between 1 pm to 4 pm),1976 Hall Road, Berwick. Eileen's garden has a number of original concrete sculptures and glass totems. Some of the totems will be for sale.

Plans are coming together for the annual District 4 meeting, hosted by Bedford Horticultural Society on April 13. To date, we have 120 people registered and 17 clubs represented. You do not have to live in District 4 to attend, people from other areas are welcome to come too. The cut off date for pre-registration is Sat. March 30th.

Making the most of a short growing season is a challenge faced by all Northern gardeners, but while many solve this by growing transplants indoors, I have found that, with a little ingenuity and planning, you can direct-seed just about everything outdoors, and still get a good harvest. In this presentation I discuss the relative pros and cons of transplanting vs direct seeding, and then talk about how I make direct seeding work in my garden.

Just a note to remind everyone of the upcoming Orchids Show in Wolfville. Everyone is encouraged to bring plants and/or just come to visit the show. It's always a great pick-me-up this time of year with the venue in the K.C. Irving Conservatory allowing us to view the orchids in natural light. For most of the years we have held this show it’s been sunny !
All those who can, are encouraged to bring plants for display. Since the show is only one day, the setup is in the morning and we can include plants that arrive here by 10am. The Wolfville people begin setting up around 8:30, and they bring the plants in through the back of the building and up the elevator. For others, the best thing to do may be stop in front, run in and someone can help you find the back entry. Or take the plants in through the front as long as you are running in anyways.

Directions to the show are as follows. From Halifax on Hwy 101: Take Exit 10 off Highway 101 (Wolfville); follow this road (Highway 1) until you enter Wolfville (about 4.5 km). Drive through the downtown, past the Acadia Campus to University Ave. and turn left (South). The Irving Centre is the up the street and to your right.

Glad Gardens

The first flower of our Brugmansia sanguinea! We started it from seed last year. Now that it has bloomed and the flower looks like it should (you never can be sure from seed!) we can root cuttings to sell this spring! I love the oak leaves. Very unlike the other colours of brugmansia we have.

If you have not signed up to make Christmas dinner centrepieces but wish to do so, please contact Bernice Hartnett at 902-832-2834. If you have it, please bring any of the following with you: pine, cedar, holly, boxwood, euonymous, rose hips, cones, containers (for your own centrepiece or for the tables). You may wish to use candles and ribbon and bring your own pruners and wire cutters with you. Oases will be supplied.

Sean James’ Talk
Sean James is coming to Bedford! Here is your chance to meet and learn from Sean James, a nationally recognized presenter of all things gardening. The title of his upcoming talk at the Bedford Horticultural Society is Reduce Your Maintenance--music to all gardeners’ ears! After his presentation, Sean will be happy to answer gardening questions from the floor. BHS has invited the Sackville Gardening Club, Dartmouth Horticultural Society and the Fall River Gardening Club to attend. This event will be a good opportunity to meet neighbouring garden club members and learn some great gardening tips from Sean.

Danny Nau, our speaker for the October meeting has offered to let us tour his gardens and 4 other gardens on Kirkwood Court, off Southgate Dr in Bedford.
The tour will be on Sunday, October 14th at 2 pm.

Two more tours are booked, close to each other, but they are on different days. I find it hard to tour 2 large gardens and have a chance to see everything in one evening.

Sunday, Aug 26th at 1:30 pm we can tour James Henderson's garden Kingswood. James grows a lot of dahlias and he also has several varieties of tomatoes, plus some other unusual plants.

Monday, Aug 27th at 6 pm we can tour Marleigh Leaman's gardens at Kingswood North, Lucasville.

Hope to see a good turnout for both of these tours.

Monday, Aug 13 saw members of BHS tour Maureen Yeadon's garden in Brookside. This was the first time she had a group tour her garden. A fabulous garden, well laid out, with lots of artwork and statuary.

On Monday, Aug 13 at 6:30 pm we have the opportunity to tour Maureen Yeadon's garden in Brookside. She has posted some beautiful photos on the NSAGC page, and I have shared them to this page, see post below.
Please message for address.
She suggests wearing sturdy walking shoes if you plan to walk down as far as the lake.
This is the first time that she has had a group tour her garden.
For people living in Bedford, I suggest you meet at the parking lot of the United Church at 6 pm and carpool from there.
If anyone from Dartmouth wishes to go, please give me a call at 902-402-2997 and we will arrange to meet.

I also have booked a tour of Marleigh Leaman's garden in Hammonds Plains for Aug 27 at 6:30 pm. More details to follow on this one.

A reminder about the garden tour on Monday, July 23rd at Betty Shaw's. There is visitor parking in the back of the condo but there is also lots of street parking in front. It is called Summer Cove at 50 Nelson’s Landing Blvd.
Also there is a garden tour planned for August 13th of Maureen Yeadon's garden. More details to follow on this one.

BHS members went to the Lavender Festival in River John, then had lunch at Big Als' in Tatamagouche, toured Mary MacAulay's garden and had a train ride thru Tatamagouche.

BHS will be touring Jay Wesley's garden in Fleming Park on Monday, June 25 at 7 pm. Meet at the United Church Parking lot in Bedford at 6:30 pm if you plan to go.
If you have not yet joined BHS and would like to go on the tour, please contact me for further info.
It looks like the rain is going to stop mid to late afternoon so the tour will be on for Monday evening.

We are now coming up on our last meeting of the year. My, how time flies.

Flower Arranging Event:

Our next Flower Arranging Event will take place at the Leisure Club on Sunday May 27th at 6 pm. Come and learn how to make flower arrangements for the tables and take one home as well.

Things to BRING:

a container for your arrangement to take home
pruners and/or scissors
greenery from your garden
flowers from your garden that would be usable
BHS Meeting:

As usual, our BHS meeting will be held on Monday, May 28th, 2018 at our usual place, the Leisure Club on Bedford Hwy.

Changes to the meeting this month only:

There will be a few changes this month as it is our AGM and we will NOT follow our regular schedule. Come for the meeting at 7pm. We hope to have the meeting over by 7:30 so we can enjoy an extended social time which will consist of sweets and savories. Nominations and voting for new officers will take place at this meeting. Positions are still open and Nominations will be accepted for all open positions. If more than one person is nominated for a position, a vote will be held. We would particularly like someone to step up for the Secretary position for next year. Please give it some consideration.

A reminder of NSAGC Convention 2018: Hosted by South Shore District 6, on June 1 and 2, at the Days Inn, Bridgewater. They are not sold out if you decide to go last minute.

We did the draw for registration ($40) from those registered who are willing to be our voting members and bring back some information for the September meeting. Those selected were Kathy Harvie and Beverley Scott. Thank you for being our voting members.

Plant Sale: Our annual Plant Sale was held on May 19th, at Scott Manor House. Many thanks to all those who helped out in any way. It was a great success financially, bringing in $1657 (less some plant sale expenses). That amount will help us out in our endeavors in the next year. Some Photos from the plant sale are attached.

Halifax Garden Festival: We are still looking for volunteers for the Halifax Garden Festival on June 16th at Victoria Park in Halifax. Please reply to this email to indicate you wish to help out.

Remember to bring your mug and a plate for finger foods, and door prizes are always welcome.

...IN THE WORLD. Well, that's not the case for herbaceous perennials. Garden perennials belong to dozens of plant Families. There are thousands of Species within about 500 plant Genera. In total, there are approximately 100,000 ornamental herbaceous perennial varieties and cultivars. Some are 'common' and some are 'less common/unique/rare'. We grow many within each of the 2 categories.

Bedford Horticultural Society meeting on Monday, October 23rd, 2017 at our usual place, the Leisure Club on Bedford Hwy at 7pm for social time before our meeting at 7:30.

Our guest speaker will be Twila Robar-Decoste. Twila works in watercolour, acrylic, oil and pen and ink to create realistic paintings of native birds and animals, botanical paintings, landscapes and seascapes.

Remember to collect seeds from your plants and bring them on Monday for our seed exchange.

Bring a friend, lug a mug, and door prizes are always welcome.

The sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) may be best known for its delicious tubers, but it has also given rise to many ornamental varieties grown for their colorful foliage. You may even have one in your own container garden without knowing it. It is, by nature, a creeping plant, and can be used as a summer groundcover, but it’s most popular as a trailing plant for containers and hanging baskets, as the stems drip gracefully downward when it’s grown in a pot.
