Your Bedford Lions need some legal advice. I apologize but this isnt going to be short.
HRM (not our Councillor, this is a staff issue) is pushing the Lions to sign one of a few lease options in order to keep using the Lions Den, and other spaces within the Dr. Gerald LeBrun Center, named for a charter member of the Bedford Lions Club.
These leases will require the Lions to pay either significant rent to the city, or take over the cost of maintenance of the facility and pay property taxes, both of which will significantly impact the Lions ability to serve our community.
Those of you who have been around Bedford long enough will already know the source of our issue.
Back in the late 70's what was then the town of Bedford came to the Lions hat in hand and we paid off the mortgage for the new arena and proceeded to pay for the building of the attached recreation centre. Ay that time, the Lions paid more than $400,000 to build and renovate this facility. In exchange for that in 1982, we signed a contract with the the Bedford Town Council giving us some dedicated space in the building, free use of the hall, and the space to host the bar in the hall.
That's where we are today and brings me to our need for legal advice. If you are in a position to assist us, please send us a private message and we'll setup a call.
Thank you for reading this, and thank you all for your continued generous support of our club. We are celebrating our 80th anniversary this year and hope to keep doing it for many years to come.
