This summer, we had the honour of hosting University of Alberta President Bill Flanagan and Saffron Sri during their stay at Rutherford Cottage.

Their words describe this place in a way that feels incredibly true to its spirit:

On June 2, 2026, we had the joy of hosting a wedding at Rutherford Cottage. Our Property Steward, Tereza, married her partner, Bedrich, on a beautiful rainy day. 💍🌿

On this day, 169 years ago, Alberta’s first Premier, Alexander Cameron Rutherford, was born (Feb 2, 1857)

Shown here is an official portrait of Rutherford, with Rutherford Cottage in Banff in the background — a place he used as a retreat, where he spent time resting and enjoying the Bow Valley with his family.

Today, we remember his contributions to Alberta, education, and Canadian history.
